Feeling slightly dehydrated after class?
Osu!
How many people feel slightly dehydrated after class and favorite method to remedy? Anyone ever passout or almost passout during class? Did you learn a lesson from it? I will answer in reverse. I was training at Kyokushin Okinawa, during June '02 We were in the middle of kata and The room started to go all black. I immediately went to the back of class and lay down on the floor. My sensei asked if I was OK "NO" was my reply. The only time I answered him negatively by the way. I felt terrible, but after a couple minutes rejoined the class. I never let myself be not well hydrated again. I should have known better, being I was a Medic at the time, and heat injuries are one of our specialties. Now that I keep myself well hydrated, I always felt slightly dehydrated after class. I would drink water, but it seems like almost 2L needed for recovery. I was drinking gatorade for a while to supplement the water, but I felt like there was too much sugar. I recently found coconut water in a 330ml container. It is a natural sports drink if you will. One container and about .5L water and I feel great. Osu! Martin

IMO, too few people pre-hydrate, and too few instructors give adequate water breaks during class. Also, it's never a good idea to pound down the liquid after class. If you're that thirsty, then dehydration is an issue. I used to be shy about taking additional water breaks, but I pour sweat, and "pink up" pretty fast, so I need the extra liquid. Osu!

![]() Same here Dent. I sweat like a crazy man! I hydrate before class and bring my own water bottle. My Sensei gives us a few breaks in class too!

I drink water constantly all day. Water....nothing else hours before training. I do drink the 'power' drinks like gatorade, but i have one called 'powerade' that i drink before training when doing long squad sessions that can be 3 hours a time! I normally drink around 1 to 2 litres of water during that time where we are constantly grabbing a drink between rounds or workouts.
I also sweat buckets and go bright red. When i first started very heavy sessions i came to the point where i was nearly passing out and going almost purple in the face but drinking a sensible amount has stopped that.

And I did learn a lesson from it indeed. ![]() Sleep well, eat well ( and no other 'physical activity') if you know you are going to get an intensive training. And in my opinion you are very right about the Gatorade stuff. It's an acid, meaning you won't have teeth left if you drink it after every training. I get the same feeling like you a lot. After a training it feels like you need 2 liter to recover your fluids. Does your dojo allow a 10 second break to drink some water? |

I very occassionally get dizzy during training, but not often. I do get very thirsty and unfortunately we don't often get a drink break, if we are lucky we will get one during a 1.5 hour training session, but usually none - I would like more drink breaks.
Lucy I go bright red too, do you find drinking more helps with this? I also only drink water, although sometimes drink gatorade if I'm grading or similar. I get really hot, but don't sweat very much. |

Gatorade was a brand held by Quaker Oats (the company that makes oatmeal, granola bars, pancake mix, etc., etc.). This was considered a highly sought after brand, and started a bidding war between Danone, Coca Cola and Pepsi...they all wanted to have this brand in their portfolio because it has so much market share. So, how did it end up? In order to get the Gatorade line-up, Pepsi bought all of Quaker Oats!! To the tune of $13.4 BILLION dollars in the year 2000!!! vapor
