I wondered about that, MilkManX. I've not been to Turkey yet, but if that's their coffee, they should be the world's most productive nation!

Aside from doubting it due to the nature of the ever-so-respectable people involved, I can see how it might be. I can't imagine driving after a couple of cups of that stuff, and neurosurgery, well let's not even think about that...

Coffee is very highly acidic which is the main problem I have with it. You might want to take a piece of litmus paper and test your saliva to see how far away from 7 (water) you are. acidic saliva and blood degrades your health quickly over time and leads to some very fast tooth decay and makes you more vulnerable to various sicknesses among other problems. Tea on the other hand has no acid and might be a good choice to switch to for your morning caffeine if you need it.

then again i've been known to occasionally enjoy turkish coffee or an espresso. black. no sugar.

I'm with MilkmanX - everything in moderation... I myself enjoy a cup or two every morning. When I drink more than that I get headaches and just don't feel good.

Osu sandman.
I've heard "everything in moderation" referred to numerous times and it got me thinking. How exactly do you determine moderation? For some people, half a pop-tart a year is moderation, while others might find ways to justify a box a day as moderation. I guess how you moderate depends on your own personal goals but I've heard this expression used more often as a reason to cheat yourself. Maybe cheating yourself in moderation is perfectly fine no?

Good question, Gar23. I think "in moderation" means adjusting it to the norm. So if the norm among coffeedrinkers is to drink 2-5 cups of coffee a day, you need to moderate it if you are drinking too excessively. I pull the numbers out of thin air of course. On the other hand, many of us might practice much more than the norm, but it doesn't have to be excessive. It all comes down to the individual, or the given group he belongs to.

For me its more about finding the limit where you can enjoy it without the negative side effects. If you are drinking 3 cups a day and you dont get jittery or have headaches and your blood pressure and other vitals are fine, then I'd say you are drinking in moderation. Of course depending on body type and other factors the specific amount would be different for everyone. Probably the best thing to do if you are concerned about it is ask your doctor. Same goes for sweets and alcohol unfortunately You are right about people using "moderation" as an excuse to indulge, but if they are honest with themselves, they can add up the calories, fat grams, etc... in the pop tarts and quickly figure out that a box of pop tarts a day is too much. I guess it really is difficult to establish a precise number (of poptarts or cups of coffee or anything else) that represents moderation - in many cases you have to just use common sense and draw a line in the sand.

I think I should go out and find a donut place where I can test the limits of my moderation...

Coffee is the only drug I take. It is a performance enhancing drug, but it has significant side effects.

I do not use it for sport. I use it to wake up in the mornings! It is qutie funny- I have an 8:00am meeting with my boss every morning, and he almost always takes one look at me and says "Can I buy you a coffee?".

I am lucky -and unlucky..in that I am extremely sensitive to caffiene. So if for some reason I need to stay awake all night, a couple of well spaced coffees is all it takes.

The flip side of that is that I absolutely cannot get to sleep if I drink coffee in the afternoon. A couple of days ago I ate a dessert....and stayed awake until 0300. (Had to be up at 0600...so you can see why the boss wanted to buy me coffee). I have just been and checked the label, and that dessert had coffee in it. Sigh.
'
About 5 years ago my husband noticed that he was feeling angry all the time. Cut the coffee out completely, and he is docile as a lamb. He won't touch teh stuff now. Makes him feel BAD.

So - caffiene is a drug, no doubt about it. Coffee in excess is very bad for you, but used in moderation (which is the country that the moderators come from) it is qutie safe for most healthy people

This is true. Coffee is very healthy for The Moderate People of The Moderation. Coffee is simply what makes us Moderators. Don't believe me? Then why do we have a flag, if I may ask?

Some jokesters call it the land of the mean, home of the (coffee)bean. I find that offensive.

Coffee is not acidic. It's Ph is pretty neutral, far more neutral than, say, orange juice.

Coffee protects against tooth decay; it's a deterrent for tooth decay as it inhibits streptococcus mutans, the detrimental bacteria indicated in tooth decay (due to its caffeine and tannin content), and it also prevents the formation of plaque. It will stain your teeth, though, with heavy use
