Coffee Good, Bad or Fine?
With so many conflicting reports whats the truth? I've cut down a fair bit on my coffee consumption, but should I worry?
My Opa brews this stuff so thick it's almost to the point of being syrup and he doesn't drink it in small amounts either, he's in excellent health. I hear some articles say it's high in antioxidants, and others say it ruins you're stomach. Whats seems to be the consensus on the forum?

I drink several cups a day, as black as I can get them. As do others at the dojo. I've even heard that a good cup of coffee prior to practice, is better than the chemical stuff in energy drinks.

I never drank coffee until my son was born almoast 5 years ago. Now with two young kids, a dojo and a day job, I can't do without it. I still only drink 1-2 cups per day, but it keeps me going.
I have found that for myself on the odd occasion that I have had a cup before training (15-20 min before) I have felt more energised and had more endurance. I don't make this a habbit though. I try and have my coffe in the morning and that usually does me for the day and evening. |

They change the opinion on coffee like every other year.
I myself drink it daily. 1-3 cups in the morning and I am good for the day. I just add a touch of Milk or Creme but no sugar. I think like everything else its fine in moderation. Now if you are drinking a pot and half a day you could be in for heart problems later on.

I worked for an MD last year who told me there is no conclusive evidence that large amounts of coffee are harmful to the human body, and there have been exhaustive tests.

I once had a weird heartbeat thing going on. went for an ecg, all ok. Was then told by doc that it was probably down to excess caffiene consumption!! As i was drinking around 6 cups of tea or coffee a day plus coke this was probably correct. I do agree though everything in moderation, i have cut down my daily intake and no more probs

Osu!
(Good thing some of you are typing. With all that caffeine, your handwriting must be fascinating! )I'm no coffee drinker, but I've been bought, or brought, the odd cup, and been polite about it. Usually it's ok to have a sip or two, and leave the rest, but once I was out visiting with my Sensei, and we were brought some substance that was supposedly coffee. I know it was thick, dark, and that it ate my spoon. One taste, and I was sure that would be more than enough to demonstrate good manners. No go. Sensei said, "Drink more." Then they brought out the refill..... Well, later I declined the offer of a ride back to the hotel, and walked mile after mile at a pace that would have impressed anyone who wasn't laughing at the very odd Gaijin bouncing from foot to foot. I was still feeling the effects at training that night, and I'm very pleased to say that I haven't had a similar experience since! Osu!

I would say that you are right - I like strong coffee but I couldnt handle turkish coffee (or the coffee in Saudi Arabia either - just a different taste)

Good or bad -its too late for me. I dont function without regular cups of coffee.
Large cups, black and strong (american coffee is like making love in a canoe -to quote a famous monthy python scene). Btw. Coffee (or coffeine) in large doses are classed as doping. Not sure how much you have to drink to get to that level, but Im sure you would lose a lot of sleep :-)

Caffeine is not only present in coffee, energy drinks and Coke, but in a lot of other everyday groceries. Avoiding it would therefore be futile, and it would be especially hard for small female competitors to stay under the legal limit of 12 ug/ml that was in effect for 20 years. One of my friends was taken aside by the doping control at the latest Sabaki Challenge Spirit. After drinking 2 liters of water, she was still unable to produce a urine sample, so she asked if she could have a beer or a drink instead, to "speed things up". She was denied the request (supposedly since alcohol is considered doping), however they did give her coffee.
