Shigeru taught Shotokan karate??
When i lived in New York, I had trained in the Shigeru's Dojo back in the late 70's to early 80's, i did not know that Shigeru taught Shotokan...
The Black belt article stated that Michael Jai White studied shotokan under Shigeru Oyama. I knew he studied shotokan and some kyokushin. I am not taking anything from Jai, i have seen him in early open tournaments and he was pretty good.

Can anyone verify if Shigeru Oyama taught shotokan karate?

Osu!
I know the history of Oyama Karate, i just wanted to know if anyone else knew of Shigeru teaching Shotokan Karate at the same time that he was promoting his karate theory when he split away from the kyokushinkai. Blackbelt magazine stated that Jai White had learned his shotokan from Shigeru. Maybe Jai White did not know how to explain Oyama Karate to the magazine since Oyama Karate isnt "Hollywood karate" and shotokan is more main stream.???

Was it a interview with him or was it a article about him written by someone else?
It would not be the first time that BB mag made a serious factual error.

I dont think Shigeru ever trained shotokan since he grew up with Sosai (sosai took the japanese name Oyama while living with shigerus family when he first moved to japan). Somehow, once the Shigeru brothers were old enough to start training, I see them training under their family friend.

Dear orisha66,
I've read that article and I tend to think it was a mistake. White was born in 1967 and Oyama went independent in 1986 (White was 19) but the article suggested that he was graded to shodan in both arts in his very early teens if I'm correct. At that time Oyama should still be close to Kyokushin. But if you're asking if he promoted Shotokan theories when he split off then I can only say "don't know/never heard of".

OSU!

I made a call and did a little research on this and people who trained with Shigeru stated this. No he did not teach ShotoKan, but in the early days after WWII while Sosai was still formulating Kyokushin as they trained they trained Shotokan since that was what Sosai knew...

Jai white does not have a black belt in kyokushin. He claims to have a total of 7 different black belts. How old is he? For someone to receive 7 different quality black belts the guy has to be 50 years old by now. I trained under Shigeru and I never saw him at headquarters or heard of him.

Shigeru Oyama never taught Shotokan Karate. Why would he? He studied Kyokushin Karate. It's obviously a mistake what's written in that magazine.

Not saying that he did teach shotokan, but in essence kyokushin is a mix of shotokan, goju and "Musashi theory". so in the early days , Sosai, Shigeru, Ashihara could have chosen either path. but other than that, i feel that it was a mistake by the magazine, but i think it was stated by Jai, also and at the same time,... out of the 20 something years that i have read Blackbelt mag, i can't think of an issue that was about Shigeru Oyama. So a mistake by BBM on this subject could be possible for lack of knowledge of all the kyokushin offshoots.

Kyoushin Karate is more than Shotokan Karate, Goju-ryu Karate and Musashi Myamoto's theory. Kyokushin Karate started as a fusion of thow two Karate styles you mentioned (altough i consider that Goju-ryu had a much deeper impact in Kyokushin Karate), Kodokan Judo, Chugoku Kenpo, Shiseijuku Taikiken and Thai Kickboxing.

True that. i am also a student of kyokushin and i know of the other influences that Sosai has put into his art. I only gave a quick break down of the art. and if you think about and have read the 5 rings, Musashi was also MM Artist. The theory that i say that was from Musashi that is Kyokushin way is; "You must learn the small things and the big things."
"The Way is in training.
Become aquainted with every art.
Know the Ways of all professions.
Develop intuitive judgement and understanding for everything."
but other than that, this is a discussion for anther thread. i was just looking for answers to something that read and asked about. Osu!
