Ya know - the thing that annoyed me most in this series was the endless descriptions of what the women were wearing. I really don't care if Egwene is wearing green brocade or satin, or even velvet. And I truly don't care if Nynaeve has flowers on her dress or not. Some strange desire to try to appeal to female readers....but UGH!!!!

If I get to include the books I've read to my kids, I'm easily into triple digits. Which is numerically more than the number of pages in said books.

Frig! Is everyone simply excluding their 'study' books because they're too boring or am I the only idiot that has a stack of books like ROI in Human Capital, Thinking Like A CEO, Good to Great, NLP At Work, Six Sigma (etc etc etc) on their night stand? I've gotta find some junk to read!!!

I'm excluding mine, because it's less like reading, and more like wading through sludgy pools of acidic molasses.

I did pick up Kyle Maynard's No Excuses though, and that is a very worthwhile read.

Me too, Seienchin. I'll go back to the fifth grade then, and see if I can finally get it right. (Damn fractions!)

I've heard of big city learning like that, but I don't ever expect to see it for myself.

Had to do my Six Sigma a few years back and I thought it was really hard work, was very proud of myself getting my Green Belt , then I showed my notes and course work to my missus; 'Oh I loved statistics when I did my degree, ah it's a bit basic thought didn't you get bored?' I thought my brain was going to melt doing this stuff . Bit like thinking your good at knockdown then seeing the World Championships and realizing there are much, much bigger fish.

I have to chip in a bit of daddy praise here too, on the way off on our Hols last year we picked up the new (last?) Harry Potter on the way to the Airport for my daughter - she'd read it by the next morning! As a poor reader I have no idea how this is even possible, on the same hol I spent two weeks reading half a book a third of the size .

I finished my Murakami book on the flight from Geneva to Copenhagen....

Now I am chewing on:

What are you optimistic about?
Today's leading thinkers on why things are good and getting better

Yes, that does get a bit annoying. It's nice to know, if it is relevant, but sometimes he simply took it too far. But it's even worse when he goes on to give detailed descriptions of the surroundings, like the pattern in the carpet or the carvings on a chair.

Give me some good news, vapor-san.

Kidding aside, that book looks pretty interesting. I just skimmed over a couple of pages and some of the topics sound very thought provoking. For example- "When Men Are Involved in the Care of Their Infants, the Cultures Do Not Make War".

Thanks for posting, vapor.

I am not too far into it yet.....so I don't have any nuggest of wisdom to impart from the book, but when I saw it, I figured it could serve as a nice balance to all of the negatives you here on the news!

Very interesting thought, and it might well be true. Speaking to another father today about the prospect of the re-introduction of conscription, both of us were adamant that our sons would not be available to go to war.

I'd like to read that. The title does provoke some thoughts. How many cultures have not made war? Is it only cultures with non-traditional gender roles that are peaceful? What are the implications for traditional family values? How much paternal input is required to reduce the likelyhood of war?

Not currently on my nightstand, but definitely in my book case is The Origin of Satan by Elaine Pagels. It addresses the topic of demonizing those not of your social group. Demonizing the enemy is the first step towards making war on him. I'm inclined to believe that cultures that are insecure about their identity or feel threatened by "demons" are prone to war.
