Yup - I have trouble answering to this as I don't see training as being tirering in such a way that I need to rest doing something else active. I just switch focus sometimes from one aspect of training (fighting) to another (kata, or self defence, or weapons or on rare occasions, kihon! )

I am a frustrated surfer. If there was anything that could approach replacing Kyokushin in my life it would be surfing. The problem is my balance sucks and I don't get many opportunities to surf.

What I've been doing is work on foot/ankle rehab and balance on an Indo board. An Indo board is an oval plank of plywood riding over a 6" diameter cylinder. I've got my kids interested in balance training. My dream is to get the whole family on board.

Osu!

I feel you pain, Meguro. Karate or surfing. I don't think you can do both unless you have a shed full of money, and a family that can live out of a backpack.

I have an image now of Meguro and all his family (including the dog- if there is one) all crowded on one surfboard - made me laugh - thanks.

karate actually helped my surfing...so yes, I do both..

I had never surfed when I met Mr S, but he was a disreputable surfer boy, and I quickly learned that it was far more fun to join in than to sit on the beach. In those days, very very few women surfed, all the girls would do was lie on the beach in their bikinis looking gorgeous.

Mr S, progressive soul that he is, taught me. But he couldn't believe it when I was standing by the end of my first lesson....My stance on the board really cracked him up though - I was surfing in Kokutsu dachi.

I have had to change stances twice, once with each knee reconstruction. I used to be goofy footed, and the leg that I tied the rope to needed an ACL reconstruction. So I changed feet. then busted the other knee, so I had to change back again.

I still use the concepts of karate stances when I surf, mainly to have conscious control of weight distribution.

My advice Meguro - given (with respect) your age, and the fact that you don't live near a "big wave" destination, is get a big Malibu board....and invest in a few lessons to get the knack of catching the waves. and I don't believe you when you say you have poor balance. I have seen you move!

Osu! seienchin, I'm definitely in agreement on board length. Maybe my girls will ride short boards, but my synapses say long board for me! As for the balance, well, I'm not a kid anymore.

Osu!Don't tell me you were lured to Jersey for the shopping malls and the terrific beachbreaks. The malls a barred from entry by miles of traffic and the latter exist only in dreams.

No, I can't say that the Jersey shore was a factor.

I did grow up spending significant effort on the study of wave faces. I bought my first car based on the space to put my board, and a place to sleep.

Oh Yeah....90 minutes to some beautiful point breaks in the famous Noosa National park, and 60 minutes to the Gold Coast. 90 minutes to Kirra, which I have never surfed, (but my husband has) - it is a "gun" site, and when it goes off, top name surfers fly in from all over the world.

So yeah... I have access....

Although it would need judicious usage, it's posts like this that make me long for sound on the site. I'm quite sure I'd here a, "Nyah, Nyah, na na Nyah!" in there!

Once again, I can't believe I was this ' ' close to moving to Brisbane...

I've heard of the latest time saving devices for travel. Steam engines, I think they're called?

Seriously though, methinks Mrs Dent is happy here, and that will make leaving very, very difficult...
