Outrageous comments/ statements

I've been wondering, what sorts of outrageous comments have you heard made about Karate by either Karateka or members of the general public?

(All Forum rules apply. Some of the saltier ones may be kept to yourself. )

One of those that stand out for me occurred during a post-training seminar. This individual ({Not a Kyokushin person.} Who is still selling, and doing very well for himself... ) told us that unless we were making $100 000 USD a year from Karate, we shouldn't be teaching.

Given that most of my Sensei used to pretty much pay to teach (Covering the rent, transport, helping out the members here and there.), I had a less than pleasant reaction to this statement. How many of us would even be in the Dojo if our instructors all shared that attitude? Absurd individual...

I am not really opposed to people making money with Karate if what they are selling are beneficial to the public.

'All you need is bulk - all that karate stuff is useless against some one of a decent size' Said to me by a guy at a Gym near where I used to live, kinda changed his mind when I showed him the 'areas I'd target on a 'big guy' as none of them are composed of muscle

In my 20 years of involvement in the martial arts I've had all sorts said to me but to be fair most of it justed washed off so it never stuck enough to recall bud sorry.

Mine...Said by a person who would have gone pretty far in the Cage if he didn't get injured early on.

"Traditional Martial Arts will get you killed on the streets. Need to know MMA."

My thought process is...uumm, what do you think the standup part of that MMA is? Where do you think Ground fighting came from?

omg... its so late in the morning and i havent slept so im really tired but ill come back and tell the story about the guy fighting 40 people. twice in his life. in a street fight. well that pretty much says it all so if anyone wants me to elaborate i can.

or how about this gem - "85% of fights go to the ground".....

My wife, when she saw a pic of the after training pub gathering commented, "but they look like regular old men." I had to laugh because there was so much truth and irony in that statement. Yup, just regular- irregular guys.

I knew a seventeen year old kid once who went and got "Duty and Death" tattoo'd on his arm in English and Japanese as his instructor had told him that that was the 'true' way of the Martial Arts.

His mum was not best pleased.

Oh my freaking goodness! That is some scary stuff right there. I suspect the writer had a bad experience with martial arts. Maybe he did not pass his grading, despite his high moral standards?

ok, sorry it took me so long. i was exhausted and then busy. anyway i used to work nightshift at a 24 hour gas station. people would always come in and talk about crazy stuff. some more than others. some more drunk than others.

this one night its the middle of the night on a weekday and some guy comes in. literally out of nowhere he starts talking a mile a minute. just jumping from one subject to the next. seriously doesnt let you get a word in edgewise. the weird thing is he wasnt drunk or high on anything. he was just that type of person. and the whole time i couldnt stop thinking about that scene in the first rush hour where Jackie Chan has that line about "bullshit" when he first talks to Chris Rock.

among other things this guy joined the military when he was 15, in a 1st world country mind you, he was literally 2 weeks away from selling pepper spray to every law enforcement agency on the north American continent until someone else did it, his mentors are Donald Trump and the like in NY, and at any given time he could get a job making 2000 dollars a day but he just doesnt feel like it right now....

at one point he tells me about his martial arts experience and how it comes in handy on the street. he wasnt too detailed about the circumstances that instigated this fight but he fought 40 people in a parking lot. the way he won was he got between a car and a garbage truck. with his back to the garbage truck he was protected and with the car in front of him he only needed to worry about them coming from 2 directions. he then squats a little and starts pushing punches to each side.

about 20 people or so into the fight they finally land 1 hit on him and he got popped in the lip which promptly starts bleeding and only serves to anger him. as an afterthought he remembers hes actually fought about 40 people on two seperate occasions.

about 3 hours later he asks what i do besides work there and i mention im a student. he asks what college i say a martial art actually. "oh so you totally get what i was talking about when you have to protect your back as the most important thing and stuff, right?" sure man. i know what you meant.
