History of Toshinkai Karate
Toshinkai karate is a relatively modern style of martial art that was founded in Japan in the late 80’s.

The differences
There are numerous differences between Toshinkai and the traditional styles originally developed by karate’s pioneers. Although the styles vary in technique they all share common ideals such as respect, modesty, kindness, integrity and the strength of perseverance.

One of the most notifiable differences is the advocation of contact during sparring.

The reason for this being that if someone is to learn to defend themselves properly against an attack then they must be aware of and learn to control the effects of a blow.

The contact helps strengthen and condition the body and mind to shrug off blows with little or no effect.

The meaning of Toshinkai
The “Toshin” in Toshinkai roughly translates as “True Spirit”.

This conveys the idea that through training one can learn to form an indomitable spirit and also suggests that students of Toshinkai always approach training and life endeavouring to maintain the ideals of karate.

World wide
Toshinkai is now practiced in Japan, China, Brazil, Mexico and more recently Australia.

World wide there are more than 3000 students practicing Toshinkai Karate and it is continuing to grow strongly.

The Federation was founded
The International Friendship Karate-Do Federation Toshinkaikan was founded by Kancho (President) Yuji Shimizu approximately 18 years ago.

Kancho Shimizu holds a 7th Dan Black Belt in Karate-Do and continues to personally teach at the Honbu Dojo in Anjo in Japan.

Toshinkai comes to Australia
In 2003 Kancho Shimizu sent his son Hayato Shimizu (2nd Dan) to Tasmania to bring Toshinkai to Australia.

Sensei Hayato had been training in karate for approximately eighteen years. On arrival in Tasmania Sensei Hayato opened the Dojo at the University of Tasmania Sandy Bay were he was studying for a degree.

In 2005 Bruce Elwell was invited to travel to Japan to compete in Toshinkai’s world championship tournament “Battle front 1” were he fought against black belts from other countries and styles.

On returning to Australia, Bruce was awarded his 1st Dan Black belt in Toshinkai Karate. He is the first Australian to achieve this.

He was also bestowed with the honour of being the first official Branch Chief for Toshinkai in Australia.

This was awarded by the world president Kancho Yuji Shimizu
Funny that the notable difference of toshinkai is full contact kumite. Kyokushin was developed 30 years before the start of toshinkai

Toshinkai means "True spirit"
Kyokushin means "The Ultimate Truth" or "Perservering Spirit"

Toshinkai(kan) is not a big organization in Japan, but the "Battle Front" tournament that they develop is quite famous. Both Luciano Basile (6th WT IKO-Matsui Brazil representative, now Seiwakai) and Kitajima Yuyu (World Heavyweight Champ of the 1st Byakurenkaikan Championships) have won it.

"To" means "fighting" or "struggle" and "Shin" means "truth" (same as kyokushin). So I gather together they mean "true battle" or something like that.

I know there was a japanese who came to the Hobart dojo to train a few months back, im not sure if its the same guy or not, i'll have to ask to ask my sempai about it.
I might even go along to see what its like differences/similarities etc.

edit:from what i have found (in english) toshinkai is definately a breakaway from kyokushin, havent found when this occured or anything else about them yet.

Dear kyokushin4life,
From the kanji names the links are not from the same organization (like "Seido Juku" and "Seido Kaikan").

Yes, now if we could all just get to cooperate for competitions.....
Imagine a TRUE world knockdown karate tournament!! Not just a internal style/organization tournament.

Oh well. Just Daydreaming.

I still have not found any details, but I have found that Toshinkai under Yuji Shimizu is a kyokushin offshot. But the when&why, or Yuji Shimizu record from kyokushin -no idea.

Dear Martin H,
I know that Shimizu Kancho was a yudansha in Shitoryu. I am not sure if he has studied Kyokushin.

The only thing that would make me think he is from Kyoksuhin is that he and Toshinkai are mentioned on Shahs Kyokushin Lineage page.

I remember there being guys from Toshinkai competing at the tournament I took part in in Shanghai last saturday. I asked one of the other guys wether he knew anything about them and his answer was: "Our organisation (Kenshikaikan) used to be a part of Kyokushinkaikan and at that time they wore uniforms with Toshinkai printed on it." (????)I said: "Yeah, ok, that makes sense." ^^ So now I know! Thanks for the info!
