Seido Karate
Hi everyone,
I would like to ask the difference between Kyokushin and Seido Karate. I am going back to Karate, I am a nidan in Wado Ryu but I cannot find any dojo near by. The Seido dojo is just a few block from my house, while the Kyokushin is in Little Tokio Los Angeles, about 10-15 miles from my house.
While I like the convenience I am more used to full contact karate fighting, and I don't want to go back to point sparring.
Thank you for any help.

I trained Seido for a short time when I was a kid, and have been training Kyokushi for the last 4 years, as far as I know theres little differance in styles, they are both pretty traditional on protocol etc and are both hard styles, aside from names most of the waza are the same, one thing is that I believe Seido don't allow participation in jiyu kumite until 4th kyu, and I think there is something about not using gedan maewashi in kumite.

Yeah, Seido juku/world seido karate of Tadashi Nakamura is supposed to be almost identical to kyokushin it techniques and kata. Not suprising since Nakamura used to be one of the best technichians in kyokushin (he is also reputed to be the one who created Tsuki no kata -not sure about that though). But I hear that they have cut down rather heavily on knockdown competition and sparring, sliding more to meditation, zen and semicontact sparring.
Or so I hear anyway. And they have not given up on knockdown.

But go and ask the teacher at the dojo. He will be able to give you the best info on how much knockdown sparring they do. It might just aswell be run by a oldschool sensei who eat drinks and breath knockdown.

my advice is to combine them both...meditation(zen) is very important and doing semi contact sparring gives you abilities that fullcontact doesn't develop so Seido is good BUT Kyokushin is Kyokushin...the truth...tha basis...the reality-you need to do it so just do them both

Hi Luca.
I believe that there is difference between the Seido of Shihan Nakamura and the Seidokaikan of Shihan Ishi (Andy Hug, Masaki Satake; Musashi etc). The Seido of Nakamura derives from the kyokushin but a lot is based on the meditation zen, while from the Seidokaikan of Shihan Ishi is been born the K 1 However second my experience, I am 3° dan shotokan, useful to train myself light contact that full contact. I train myself therefore from years.
OSU!

Yes Seidokaikan (founded by Ichii) is very much focused on knockdown, but frequently branch out into kickboxing. K-1 is a independent sport organization, but The founders was all seidokaikan people (with Ichii as leader) and seidokaikan still has a lot of pull in k-1.
As a style, seidokaikan is supposed to be very similar to kyokushin, but with little or no kata.
Ichii was a student of Ashihara and actualy followed ashihara whe he left kyokushin to create ashiharakaikan, but Ichii left ashihara to found seidokaikan only months later. So Ichi shared ashiharas thinking about kata.

according to akiyoshi sherwin (godan) at seido honbu, for full contact fighting, you must either be 4th kyu or show proficiency in fighting, as well as maintaining in your kihon and kata, this he says nakamura kaicho makes that judgement. then you are allowed to participate in jiyu kumite

^osu, I can confirm the above. I checked out the Seido honbu in NYC, I was thinking about joining but it was a bit more pricey than the Kyokushin IKO1 and you didn't get to fight until you were 4th kyu so I was kind of turned off.

Seido Karate (Kazuyoshi Ishii) or Seido Juku (Tadashi Nakamura), have few differences from Kyokushin style one.
The differences stay in the fight rules.
In Seido may be fight on the ring (and so with rounds) or on the tatami.
Some Seido fighting are conducted with the fists on the chest (without gloves - like kyokushin), until the last round, in which are used gloves. In other directly with gloves just on the first round.
Also may be apply a clinch of 3-5 seconds with hiza geri on the face (not in Kyokushin where is permitted the hiza geri on the face but not clinch).
If there're some Seido karate students, correct me if I wrong. OSU

Actually, "Seido Karate" usually refers to Seido Juku. You're thinking of Seido Kaikan.

Hey guys i'm new to this forum and i'm contemplating a choice essentially identical to "birba's." Sorry if this is seen as hijacking the thread, it's just this seems too relevant for me to start a new thread in the Q&A Beginners forum.

Anyway i'm looking at changing styles to some form of karate and in my area i have the choice between Seido Juku and Kyokushin. I'm looking for something with some degree of full-contact / knockdown style training, although it deffinantly doesn't have to be the focus.

From what i've read of Seido Juku, it focusses alot on personal development, meditation ect. and places huge emphasis on families, community and training for the young and old. I deffinantly have no problem with these values and actually think they are very honourable. The problem is i cannot help thinking that because of these factors, contact kumite and sparring might be quite limited to this art. I've heard they don't really delve into it until 4th kyu which is fine as long as its trained somewhat regularly at some point. The closer to traditional kyokushin style with minimal protective gear the better.

"Satori" might be able to help alot in this regard because i gather he/you are a Seido Juku practitioner based in Australia where i live also? If i'm wrong about this i apologise but some help would be appreciated.
