World Oyama karate is not kyokushin, although its very close. The founder is Shigeru Oyama (it is now mostly run by his brother Yasuhiko), who grew up with Sosai, but has no blood relation to him (When Sosai chose his japanese name he took the same name as the korean family he stayed with already had taken. Shigeru and Yasuhiko were chlidren in that family). Shigeru was a top-level kyokushin instructor from the early days of the style, sent to USA by sosai to spread kyokushin as a style. In the first world open 1975 he was the coach for the US team. In 1981 There was a political rift and Shigeru was forced to leave kyokushin to form his own style -World Oyama karate. It is very close to kyokushin, having the same kata, almost identical techniques and the same competition format (knockdown karate), but formaly it is a unique style that is only _based_ on kyokushin.

Actually, quite recently some of the Kata (Taikyoku Sono Ichi, Taikyoku Sono Ni, atleast to my knowledge) have changed in World Oyama to World Oyama Originals.

Here in California, World Oyama Karate have dojos in San Francisco and in San Jose, both cities lack representation from the other IKOs.

hello and humbly I ask, please scuse my ignorance.
What's the big difference, as far as I can tell karate is karate, and knoc-down karate still is knock-down karate. I know that each style modifies the katas a little bit here or there or the name for that matter, but they are still the same in essence, spirit, and combat strategy. e.x. the other day I was doing kanku (a shotokan kata) in wado-ryu is called kusanku but for a few movements and techniques here and there still the same kata, and also I like to point out shisoshin the way you guys in kyokushin do it compare to the go-ju style form what's the big difference still looks like shisoshin. |

About Oyama karate now there are 2 organizations of Oyama , one have Soshi - Saiko Shihan Yasuhiko Oyama becouse Shigeru Oyama give him organization. Then make secend organization OIKF ww.oyama-karate.pl With Jan Dyduch 7Dan in poland. I dont know why?
People speak that Yasushiko Sensei take too much cash for membership, and Jan Dyduch speak with Shigeru Sensei and make new orgnization. Now in OIKF is Poland , Germany, Russia and few countrys from old Russia. |

Oyama karate is alive and well in new york city, as well. They recently had a tournament as well.
I trained there for a few weeks over a school break. They have indeed changed some of the early katas, for example by having you take hands up fighting stance instead of a reverse punch sort of stance. |

World Oyama is also holding a tournament April 21, 2007 in Birmingham, Alabama. I think it is called the America's Cup. I am planning on attending this tournament.

sorry for my english.I train in World Oyama Karate Organization in Poland 10 years ago.Katas are not the same.Is 8 basic katas caled kihon no katas (1-8),one kata called tsuki no uke,few katas with bo,tonfas, nunchaku and sai(nunchaku & sai katas are not trains in every O.K. school).Advanced practiocioners trains also "advanced" katas like a sanchin no kata ,seienchin and few more from kyokushin. But seienchin and few more are not identical like a original kyokushin katas. This style is not hard like a kyokushin.Oyama Karate is based on sabaki elements like a Ashihara ,Enshin or Shin-Ai-Do Karate.I once again sorry for my english |
