World Miura Karate
Hey all, this is my first post, so don't flame me. please.
Alright, here's my situation. I've signed up to train in chicago under Miyuki Miura (winner of the '72 all Japan kyokushin touney). I've read several things about him, and he seems like quite a powerful fighter. I was wondering if somebody could fill me in on the details of the quality of his instruction if they've experienced it, and whether his students ever fight in knockdown tournaments. I know he used to be related to World Oyama Karate, so maybe his students still fight there. Any info would be great! ~Riku |

OSU! Shihan Miyuki Miura is one of the best Karate teachers in the world. He is very serious about his Karate, and his instruction is top notch. He is also very skilled in the use of several Kobudo weapons, especially the Sai. He was formerly part of the group known as the "deadly Three", which included him, Soshu Shigeru Oyama, and Saiko-Shihan Yasuhiko Oyama. Everyone sought out their instruction, especially Karate fighters from Japan who would actually travel to the USA for superior training that they could no longer receive in Japan anymore. Shihan Miura was a big supporter of the knockdown tournaments in USA(Kyokushin, and later World Oyama style), but I can't say what his emphasis is on nowadays as he is no longer associated with World Oyama group. Regardless, he is a great and experienced teacher who really cares about each student's development and progress. I don't think you could go wrong training under this man. Let me recount an interesting incident involing Shihan Miura who had to actually use his Kyokushin training in a real street fight against several members of a street gang, several who were armed with weapons. The Japanese movie company came to Chicago to film a documentary movie and Shihan Miura and his sudent Gary K. were involved. Gary was late getting there, Shihan Miura was there only to supervise, so he was wearing dress clothes. The street gang thugs came up threatning to destroy the movie equipment. Shihan Miura defended the movie company people, who were not trained in martial arts. Because the cameras were already set up, one of the cameramen filmed the fight and they included it in the documentary. Shihan miura laid out several of them cold, and others took off running down the street. The Chicago Police showed up and arrested those who were still conscious and they sent ambulances to pick up the ones Shihan Miura laid out. It was quite a scene. After all that, Shihan Miura just stood there so calm as if he was waiting for a bus at the bus stop. So, he is legitimate and proved his fighting ability right there in a real street situation. Good luck. OSU!

Thanks all. I'll post a scan sometime today of the pamphlet he sent me after I spoke with him on the phone. It's interesting, although a little vague. I also know of the kyokushin Kanku club that isn't far from Miura's dojo, although I doubt they do many activities with each other anymore.

This is the gallery page of the Saitama (Japan) Branch of Shihan's organization, you can find some new and old pictures of him.
http://www.geocities.jp/miuradojostm...dojointro.html Dear Lonewolf, I have been thinking for many years it was just a "dramatization" of a real fight that Miuyki Shihan did in the past in the "Strongest Karate" series, seems that I owe him an apology. Again thanks for providing these interesting (though serious) historical facts of Kyokushin! OSU!

Excellent! I look forward to a hard training this summer. I'm not very big (165 cm, 140 lbs.) so hopefully my body can take it. Thanks all for the info.
Oh, and I'll try to get around to posting his brochure today. I've just been swamped with finals and such. |

Hey all. I have scans of the brochure, but can anyone instruct me how to post pictures in this forum? I usually use the attachment feature, but that doesn't seem to be an option here.

A year late
But better than never...
I trained with Shihan Miura since I was child. upon turning 18, I tried many different martial arts schools. To their credit, they had some tidbits here and there that were useful. But in each of those other schools, I was the best fighter there hands down. I know a good teacher when I see one because I was taught by the best. There aren't many good teachers out there. He's the best. |
