Mumonkai?
I just watched the martial art show from Bercy ( a event where several arts puts on a display of varying quality).
As usual there was a kyokushin exhibition, but there was also a exhibition of a karate group calling themselves Mumonkai. They looked very knockdown related, and used the same helmets as daido juku. Unfortunately, they didnt do any sparring, only breaking and prearranged routines, so I could not see what type of rules they fought with. I know it was founded by a guy named Togashi Yoshimoto who was a kyokushin fighter back in the 70ies. But that is basiclaly all I know. Anyone have any details about the style?

ok. 5 minutes later. google is your friend.
Apparently they do knockdown similar to the new kyokushin-kan rules. small, mma type, gloves. helmets. and then face punches allowed. here is a page with some videos: Vidos (there is also some footage from the blood fight mad-max event discussed in the http://www.kyokushin4life.com/forums...ood-fight.html thread)

ok according to kakatootooshi, he founder was not a kyokushin man, but a outsider that tried knockdown in a all-japan and did well.
So technically it is not a kyokushin offshot.

The guard is different from karate. Looks more like wing chun (kung fu). I mean the way they start the fights by making the back of their left hands meet and then go for a fast right punch to the face. You have seen Bruce Lee do that, right?

now that you mention it, there does seem to be some differences from karate guard. I didnt see that in the Bercy demo, but it is there in the videos linked.
I wonder what style the founder trained?

Since our European Director has lived in Japan for 12 years, is friend of Master Togashi and a good friend of the European responsible of Mumonkai, I have first hand info. This style is quite different in theories to kyokushin or any other style I know. They work a lot on the idea of "ichigeki", one sigle strike, and don't practice combinations very much. But is really very interesting.
By the way, Master Togashi also did a retiring to a mountain in the same way Master Oyama did several years earlier. After that period, he felt he had discovered the true essence of karate: the hand strikes (he was very good at kicking). For Orisha66: I tried to send you a private message, but you have too many messages in your inbox.

I dunno...something about the kamae says "kick me in the ribs...please"
and the dependence on the ichigeki principle in clear...they seem to fight entirely one shot at a time

I've seen them spar and it's not so easy as it seems... They work a lot on ichigeki and the single strike, but if they fail, they move to place themselves in good position and strike again. You can see how it works in the video of MadMax:
