In the front are Miyoshi-san, Kancho Ashihara and Shihan-dai Kim Andersen. In the far left is Sensei Casper Olesen, who was awarded with yondan. At the far right is Sensei Mads Jensen, who was the main organizer of the camp.

I don't know why they always do this, but we just line up normally, and then squeeze together for a group photo. Thus only the first two rows (not even, I'm in the second row,and I'm not visible) are visible. See those lonely three people in the far distance? They are actually squeezed tight, but there are 8 rows of (invisible) children and juniors in front of them. They do this every year! Had we done the exact same, only reversed the line-up, everybody would have a fair chance. Tsk tsk.

Thanks for posting this photo, Nix. I'm guessing that no one taking pictures was a pro? Not because of the quality, but because the fault you mention is pretty glaring. Maybe a word with the organizer before next year's camp? You could even offer to organize it, and get all the lower graded folk to practice the line up. (Kids seated, next row in Seiza, next row on one knee, next the short, then the medium, and finally the tall. Possibly three chairs for the senior instructors, with the participants around them?)

Dent, the photographer is actually a professional. And the solution you mention sounds like it requires actual work. I would much rather just have them line up, and then turn 180 degrees, then the first two rows in seiza, the next two kneeling and so on. Of course, then the black belts would not be visible, and I'm not sure they would dig that.

I think you're right. Not likely they'd be happy about it at all.

Do you have a certain amount of time to do this? Do you have Dojo pics with the seniors? I've seen this be a popular idea on Gasshuku, and this way everybody has a better chance of being seen.

We usually just line up 15 minutes prior to training to take a few pictures of everybody, then everybody lines up for dojo pictures. So we don't have all the time in the world, but at least most will be seen on the dojo pics.

I just noticed that the first batch of pictures are up. Copyright Grenaa Karate Skole and photographer Sensei Pia Jensen.

For our last camp (was our 10th year) we did a great big joint photo, individual dojo pics, family pics (like ours with all 5 of us training) and a BB only line up - kept all the ego's in check

I heard from someone that its the nage katas who are the most important for ashihara but perhaps it is like you say that jissen is Kanchos favorite kata. Perhaps we can ask him next time we meet him in person.

I will go to Honbu in november I'll try to remember to ask Kancho about this if I get the chance.

Yes, we also do that. Sometimes we also do row pictures (each column is considered a group for the entire camp).

Oooh, do keep us posted.

BTW, the local newspaper wrote an article, with pictures of the Belgian students and Kancho Ashihara. I've uploaded it, for the pleasure of those who read Danish.

Nice pict, Nix. I can see me, number four from the left in the first row standing.

Do you have this with higher resolution so I can get a big pict for my ego wall at my dojo

If I survive the trip to Japan and Honbu I will perhaps post some nice story for you.
