Osu! Thanks Vapor and Bloke,

I'm not trying to recruit here, but it's becoming obvious that unless people know who and what we are we'll struggle to grow in isolation.

As was said earlier, the knockdown and sabaki styles are closely related. You might not love all your cousins, (except in certain small villages) but you have to support each other against outsiders.

Who are they? I'm fed up with kids (and parents) coming to me with horror stories about rip off McDojo charging the earth for crap training. That's the threat to real karate, poor standards, not related groups that all strive to maintain them.

Couldn't agree more. Like McDonald's ruined the reputation of the hamburger, McDojos threaten the reuputation of karate.

Gary

Just reading you CV, I bet you can't put a Fruit Pastel in your mouth without chewing it. In a McDojo Organisation you'd be an 8th Dan if you add them all together and add one just because you joined them. lol

I also didn't realise you were famous. I'm definately getting your autograph when we come down for the seminar in June Lol.

Seriously though, Its an honour to have you onboard in this forum as a fellow Karateka and good Friend

LOL - I don't know about famous. I've always been useful though but often as a 'how not to do it' for others.

You're only ever as good as your last fight and as my children gave me a doin' last night I've still got plenty of things to work on.

It's a funny thing that, you spend years climbing your own personal mountain(s) and then scrape your fingernails 'till they're bleeding trying not to slide back down ....

Osu Gary-sensei! What exactly is Enshin Karate? Is it development of Knockdown Karate competitions and Special Knockdown Tournament Strategies? Or does Ninomiya-kancho provide special insight into Self-Defense? I'd suppose one of the specialities of an Enshin Karate-ka would be the transitions from striking to takedowns as well as defending from takedowns?

Osu! Sokaiya,

Enshin is what I'd describe as "Intense Functional Training"

Some styles are so technical they are very difficult to learn or apply, so maybe they're more for personal development.

Some styles are so easy to learn they're just kickboxing with Gi's! Maybe they're just for sport.

Some styles are so crap they're just for profit!

(Note to mods: Not just style bashing, but telling it how it is!)

Enshin, in my opinion has the balance right. Practical techniques and kata that can be applied for Self-Defence without searching for the 'hidden' bunkai we always hear about. A challenging rule system for Tournaments. A depth of tradition. Kancho teaches that respect and personal challenge are integral to what we do. The real bonus of course is Sabaki, or learning to use movement to outsmart the opponent, not just outmuscle of out-lowkick them.

Hope that helps! The book 'Sabaki Method' by Kancho Ninomiya is what sparked my interest. It's worth buying if you want to find out more.

Gary

I just went to my first class of enshin karate it was really cool. I got to meet Ninomiya he was a really nice guy and even gave me a copy of his book "My journey in karate" I really like what they taught me in just that one day I hope to be a great fighter some day and I feel like I made a right choice in Enshin

Osu! Angelslayer,

You are very lucky to have Kancho teaching you directly. Stick with it and you'll get really strong.

Hi Gary,
As part of the Enshin syllabus, do you guys incorporate much or anything that might closely resemble aspects of boxing training?

I guess I am thinking in particular about "Boxing Defence", where one gets to practice defensive techniques(and counterpunching techniques) against boxing strikes?

Cheers

Osu! Kerrigan,

Not in the sense of 'classic' boxing training - at least not in my dojo.

SOP is keep away from good punchers! Move around and try to keep at kicking range. If they close the gap, keep the face covered while attacking the legs or sweeping. The Enshin rules prohibit face punches in Tournaments, but obviously we work defences in the dojo. We stop far short of gloving up though.

I completed my first week of training and I already feel like a stronger person I cant believe how easy it is to apply these techniques and just how effective they are, Im am very proud to say that enshin is a style I cant imagine myself without.

Osu! Angelslayer

I started Enshin Karate about 4 months ago and about to go for my first grading test.I myself am enjoying it immensely and hopefully can continue for years to come. What i would seriously recommend you do being a fellow White belt is to buy the Enshin basics Dvd.I found the Kihon hard to pick up at first and needed to practice on my own and the Dvd shows all the moves with Kancho explaining them.Try to practice every day if possible(only takes 30 mins or so)and the moves will start to drill into your head.

Osu! Gary,

What was attendance like for the fighters this year? Bigger lower weight divisions, or fairly even? What was the standard like? Outstanding fighters? Any new techniques pulled out of the box?

A full report, please.

Osu!
