Yeah I hope that Sensei is still teaching in SF!

I think you will like it alot being that you have both a striking and Judo background. Should feel at home to you with some twists!

Sorry I missed this post, Gary. (I had to do a search after visiting your website.) Congratulations! A remarkable achievement. There are very few Yondan grades within the Enshin organization, so it speaks very highly of you to reach this level.

Nice to see you get the recognition we feel you deserve.

Many thanks!

The test didn't go exactly as I planned / visualised, but at least there's life in the old dog yet.

It exposed a few things that still need work, so no time to get smug, just more things to work on and get smooth.

Press on!

Gary

Bit like life, eh?

I think your positive attitude, and the ability to adjust to a variety of situations is part of your individual success, and what has made you such a welcome member on the Forum.

I sincerely hope we get to meet one day.

Thanks and likewise. I don't get to the US much apart from the Sabaki Challenge, but if you ever get over to the UK just drop me a line, it would be great to meet up, train, eat and then sink a few beers.

Exactly! That was the appeal of Enshin -- that I'd be able to apply what I've learned and build up further on top of it!
Add in the principles of the Sabaki Method and a more traditional budo feel than most modern fighting gyms, and you've got one excited harukaze haha!

I think after this the road will be much more difficult!

So far I am training at class 3 times a week and also training at home and doing some sparring with some other guys who do MMA and other styles.

I hope not to disappoint myself come December!

Heh, when I went for 3rd kyu, we practiced intensivelly 5-6 times a week for 4 months. Then I showed up for the actual grading, to find out I had forgotten to sign up. Doh!

Best of luck to you!

So, Nix, did they let you test anyway?

And this leads me to stat another thread...

I felt kind of foolish when everybody else was lined up (this was at summer camp), and Sensei asked "So, what are you doing here?" But I was allowed to test anyway, and I passed. At the same grading, the one doing the count mispronounced my name when calling up who had passed for sabaki and kumite, and for ten depressing minutes, I thought I had failed.

How on earth do you mispronounce, "Lord Emperor Nix!"?

Nice move by your Sensei though.

I was thinking the same thing! Yes, Sensei saved me with the rethorical question "I might have missed the registration if you dropped it in the mailbox wednesday. Is that it?" Yes. That must be it. He knew I had been practicing for it, I had just forgotten about the registration since I was so focused on the practice.

Anyway, let's steer this back on topic. How many Enshin Sabaki Challenges are there? I thought it was only the one in Denver, but then I learned there are one in Germany. And they are open tournaments, right?

Osu! Nix

The World Sabaki Challenge in April is by application, and some evidence of ability is required - i.e. you can't just pay your fee and be guaranteed admission. New applicants usually submit a video, but for full details it's best to check at Enshin Karate - Home

The European Sabaki Challenge Tournament is held in Freiburg Germany every October and is Open. Applications to Sensei Chandana on info@enshin.de or by calling 0049 761 31616

Plans for this year also include a Sabaki Challenge in Eastern Europe or Poland (due to fighters from the former Eastern block struggling to get Visa's) This may be held in or around June, with details first appearing on the Enshin Karate - Home 'events' section. I imagine this will be Open to all.
