I'd probably be doing TKD or Judo... But considering there are two seperate Kyokushin dojo's where I live I was bound to come accross it somehow!

Great, question! I'm just putting my toe into karate and my daughter has stuck in her entire foot. My uncoordinated, shy, scaredy-cat kid! My aged, feeble, sickly little body! Whelp, we both gi up on separate sessions in the same dojo with the same sensei in our small town and come home with beginners' egos; flying kicks at one another, knocking over chairs and other pieces of crappy household items. We'll go through the katas, critiquing one another and role playing sensei (we both can imitate him to a T and we do so with love and humor), using his voice, body language and vocabulary; then go back to sneaking in a few combinations that we think we have made up with our very own imaginations. My daughter is nine and her father died a few years back. They were very close and it's been a hard one. We haven't been as close, so Kyokushin karate has been the thread to our relationship. We now, finally, have something to really fight about!

What an awesome, awesome post! I've done similar 'kicks around the kitchen' with my daughters, and it really is a fun, wonderful bonding experience. I'm glad you two have found something to share and bring (and hold) you closer

Myself, I noticed one day while I was stuck in traffic on 23rd St in Manhattan that I was in front of the Seido Juku Honbu, and it said "100 days 100 dollars" on a sign out front. I figured 100 bucks was worth it for 3 months plus in a gym in NYC, so in I went at lunchtime. If I hadn't found the Seido Juku Honbu, I would be studying ITF TKD still (which I enjoyed, honestly) instead of studying with Kaicho Nakamura, which I love.

I see you're listed as South Jersey? Where are you? I think we may have a training session and K4L get together near Princeton in the not too distant future.

I dont think it means a training cycle but that they just started Oyama Karate an offshoot of Kyokushin.

I agree, two separate things...Bulk cycle to get bigger in the gym, and Oyama Karate...

If he hadn't started attending Oyama Karate, he would be in the gym accomodating the things necessary to do the bulk up cycle.

Hard one to answer as a found Kyokushin twice now, first time around probably be doing or done some time, also would not be married to my amazing Mrs as we met in the dojo - second time around, well I'd still be in 38" jeans for a start!

As I got my kids into it early it'll be interesting how they view this question in a few years time.

Id be doing Muay Thai for sure and probably MMA, i love training MMA and i want to get into kickboxing a bit more at some stage in the future. Im pretty sure id be much less dedicated to both if i haden't found the discepline i badly needed in kyokushin.

Well, I've never taken any full-contact styles including Kyokushin or Muay Thai. So, instead, I'd say I might be more muscular and would have many proud bruises if I actually learnt knock-down styles.

I'd still be sitting on the sofa most nights eating too much chocolate!! Then other nights I'd be watching my son and others at the dojo training, wishing i could do that. It's so much better to do rather than just watch. Really glad i joined in now, so hooked now i get a bit moody when i have to miss a session

Hmm, good question, when I returned to the U of U, I still trained in Oyama with shihan Johny, but also supplemented with Wado and TKD, all that they had at the U of U. Later on, I also took about three years of aikido and about three more of Judo, and some KB. Of course, that was after Johny broken with Ninomiya, which was not a good move, in my book. I wish he would have stayed with that style, and continued to evolve on. After all the rapid changes as we left Kyokushin-kai, he then joined up with Ninomiya, his original teacher's teacher (founder of Musokai), then Joko left Ashihara, and we changed our kanji on our gis, like twice in a year, learned all new katas, twice, I am tired of all the splintering off. Might just go back to Musokai now.

In the interim, I am doing Judo, which, like TKD, you go anywhere, any city, you can find either one, and it is basically the same, no need to start over.

But, the one thing Johny did teach me, was how to "FIGHT", something I didn't truly learn, in any other style or form, except maybe KB, but not even there, I can truly say I owe that much to that man, a true fighter.

Hope this is the right place for this posting, I just joined this site.... if not apologies.....I trained Kyokushin in the late 60's and early 70's under Shihan Nakamura at the old Brooklyn Academy of Music dojo. After 35 years I returned to Karate under my old teacher in his new style.
