If you hadn't found Ashihara/Enshin/Kyokushin etc what would you be doing now?
Sensei, Sempai and Kohai
If you hadn't found Ashihara/Enshin/Kyokushin etc, what would you be doing now? This is the question I wish to ask. Myself, I would be a Senior Dan Grade in Tang Soo Do (Korean karate) and possible graded in Judo or similar. Failing that I would have maybe gone back to Muay Thai But I am so glad I found Ashihara and Wado Ryu ![]()

Well i was in athletics and playing football when i started karate. I quit football because it was too much on my legs and hips, i started getting problems and needed physio. Carried on with athletics until i was 15/16 i wanted to do heptathalon, loved track and field, but i chose kyokushin and i don't regret a thing! Although i do wonder what might have been.....

I would actually be on my Bulk Cycle in the Gym right now...(I just started Oyama 3 Months ago). And most likely getting ready for my first Powerlifting Meet this August. Most likely would have gone in for the 220 Weight Class...

Things would be quite different. I would have moved back to Norway, or to a different country, and most likely have a different job or education. Maybe I would have followed my dream and become an officer in the navy, or something else offshore. Travel the seven seas and see the world and all that jazz. And maybe even have a social life!
*sigh*

i have only been in kyokushin since august of 2007. but i all i can say is that it has changed my life. i can say that i am absolutely , without a doubt, obsess with kyokushin. i cant imagine my life without it now. if i never found kyokushin, i would probably still be playing guitar for my band and have unrealistic dreams of becoming a famous rockstar with a band that had a terrible singer haha. and i would probably still be practicing wtf taekwondo. i can say with all my heart that my blue belt in kyokushin means more to me then my black belt in kyokushin. the blue belt kyokushin version of me would undoubtedly beat up the black belt taekwondo version of me. kyokushin is what i live for now.

I would probably be playing pick-up basketball, and McDonalds on the weekends....not necessarily in that order!
But in all seriousness, I probably wouldn't have had the courage to make a huge career change, so I would be unhappy, and feeling trapped. vapor

I had a very unique converastion with Shihan Bobby Lowe's daughter Barbara much along these same lines. We were at the L.A. tournament sayonara party earlier this year and my question to her was "you have never lived life without Kyokushin, have you ever imagined what it would have been like to grow up without karate." Her answer " when I was little mom would tell me and my brother Mike to go out in the yard and play after supper. I thought nothing of the fact that in my back yard there would be my dad (Shihan Lowe),Sosai Mas Oyama and several other karateka training karate, it wasn't till several years later that I realized that not all kids grew up with this happening in their back yards, to us it was just the way life was." Her comment after this was, "no I have no idea what life would be like without karate, it has taken me and my family to so many places and I have met so many great people because of it, who can fathom life without Kyokushin." All the while Shihan Lowe just sat there and smiled that great all knowing smile he has.
I like so many of you have trained for over 30 years and look forward to 30 more. Is there such a thing as life without Kyokushin? There probably is but for those of us who train it and live it, it is had to imagine. OSU The Rev |
