Thanks for the link, Markku-san. You are right, there is not much information - the site seems unfinished right now.

It explains the basic principles of Kobukan Karate:
  • 1st level: Kihon/fundamentals
  • 2nd level: Sabaki - where technique is applied. Footwork, distance, timing, combinations, linear movements.
  • 3rd level: Kyu Tai - Understaning of movement and relaxation. Circular movements and cube movements, throwing, combinations and weapons.

Class is finished with stretching, massage and respiration in order to bring the body and mind to a point of relaxation. It goes on to say that Kobukan, unlike many other styles, suits students of all ages.

I am not sure what circular movemens and "cube movements" means. I thought that was part of the Sabaki Method, but this is probably where his own ideas take place. Having attended classes by him before, I think I have a rough idea of what it might look like.

I am intrigued. His ideas and his style of teaching is unique. I will stop by as soon as opportunity arises, and when I know exact location.

Osu!

Shihan demonstrated his own (?) kata at our camp in Sweden last fall. Looked like aikido with attitude. The footwork was pretty much like in ashihara, but there were joint locks and those quick shifts of direction that you see in aikido and traditional jujutsu. I would guess that this kata is 3rd level stuff in his system.

Ah, my bad. I was not aware that you were a Swede. I have not seen this kata, but it does sound interesting.

(BTW, did you notice his 5 block, one-inch tameshiwari in the top bar?)

Finnish not swedish. But we have compulsory swedish in school. It's probably the most hated subject in finnish schools.

And yes, the tameshiwari is amazing.

I don't think anyone knows it better than member jolut. Actually I'm quite keen to hear the answer too.

Osu,
Yes, we are NIKO affiliated again. Mostey because Higashidani Shihan asked us to join again. We had support from Ashihara Denmark as well. So-honbu was quick to respond and all the paper work is done or almost done by now.
Thanks for asking

Congratulations, or should I say welcome back? But I don't really see what Higashidani Shihan has to do with it. He quit NIKO a long time ago for various reasons. :S

Higashidani shihan have a good relationship with honbu. He wanted to help us and made some phone calls to honbu. When he was in Japan a few month ago, visiting his famliy, he took his time to visit honbu regarding our re-joining. 4 hour by train just to talk
Higashidani shihan is a nice and a very helpfull budo-ka!

Ah, I see. It was my impression that he did not get along with Honbu. Thank you for clearing that up.

NEW QUESTION:- With regards to 'Fighting Karate' and 'More Fighting Karate'

The Books written buy Ashihara O Sensei, is there any chances of them being reprinted. I feel that the Funds should be going back into Ashihara than some Collectors charging in access of £100.00 each for them. I am lucky to already have copies of these as does a majority of Ashihara Karateka.

I am sure that we would buy the new reprints or a book amalgamating the 2 books for a more realistic price available to the world hence creating alot of revenue to the Honbu.

Another reason is that we'd be possibly opening up Ashihara to new students wanting to practice the style that they have just read in the book.

This would have to be Non Political stating a Valid Representative (who still Trains) in the book.

Also are there Instructional DVD's available showing kihons/Kata from White to Black etc

What do you guys think?

Osu

Dobbersky,

I believe you can still get Fighting Karate and More Fighting Karate by Kancho Hideyuki Ashihara, but finding them in English might prove to be a challenge. Way of Life shouldn't be a problem, though. As for instructional DVDs, they do exist, but the quality isn't to be bragged about (at least not what I've seen). The DVDs are also in Japanese only, and I think only a few of them are actually meant to be sold.

I do agree that it would be a great move by Honbu to re-release the books in English, and also decent instructional DVDs with English commentary or subtitles.

Osu!

You can find some books at budovideos.com. Of course used but some of them in very good condition. I purchased some copys of fighting karate and got lucky two of them in mint condition delivered in plastic cover not even opened earlier.
But the More fighting karate was to expensive and costs alot more to get. I think it was 200 $ for that one. (I didnt buy that one)

You can also get them in Honbu's webshop, for 1,600 and 2,000 yen. I'm not sure they ship abroad, but perhaps you could contact Honbu directly.

I asked Kancho at sabaki summer camp 08 i Denmark about the books but the answear was not positive. I dont think that they are going to do any reprint in the near future.

The cost of the copyright is very expensive. I dont know how that work so I will not say more about it. But it was the answear I got and Kancho said "please try to borrow it from a friend."

But I hope that they will change their mind and reprint the books so that more can enjoy late Kanchos knowledge and ideas.
