Ashihara question
A blatant attempt to draw a few ashihara guys in here
![]() Ashihara as I understand it dissaproved of competitions and while allowing it did so grudginly and not doing anything to promote it, so what is the situation of knockdown in ashihara? I know of the Sabaki challenge event, and that many ashihara fighters regularly enters IKO2/WKO competitions (and that there are local champonships outside of japan), but is there a formal world championships? are there alla japan opens? |

The Sabaki challenge spirit is the Ashihara world championships. Kancho Hidenori Ashihara has visited it a couple of times but I don´t know of any japaneese fighters that have fought there yet. It is always held i Denmark. Russia have always had most fighters (they have most members and clubs so thats not so strange :-) ).
this is the NIKO organisation... I don´t know if any other Ashihara-organisation have their own world championships. I train with the Ashihara Sabaki-Do organisation and we have one open competiton in Sweden every year... it is called Sabaki Open. Other then that we try to enter competitions and tournaments open to all styles such as FIST, All Style, All Fight, AFC. This year we had one fighter from Lulea and one from Boden who went to the NIKO world championsips... both of the clubs are however a part of Sabaki-Do. I won the middleweight class at Sabaki Open this year and I hope that I can fight again after the summer (don´t know what competition it will be). Kancho Ashihara was not interested in competitons or even spreading his style outside Japan but now that he is dead (RIP) and his son has taken over I think it is slowly changing. |

Apart from Danes, Russia has always been well-represented. In recent years at least, they have been the largest group. But there are a lot of other Ashihara tournaments in Denmark. I've been to 4-5 this year, and I only fight Semi-contact. There are also light-contact, moderate-knockdown and knockdown. In Denmark, we fight side by side with Kyokushin, but admittedly, almost every fighter at the Ashihara tournaments for seniors, is from an Ashihara club. We've also had a few Swedes at our tournaments, which is great.~ Osu! |

Moderate knockdown is similar to semi-contact, except you wear a vest and a helmet. Moderate KD rules are usually used in junior tournaments, to give the young fighters a taste of the harder contact rules.

What I like about the Ashihara tournaments (from what I've seen), was that in Semi Contact they went bareknuckle but still used shinpads.

I´ve a question about Ashihara and Enshin as well. Do they only have their new kata or are traditional kata practised as well?

In Ashihara Karate, we only practice our own "realistic" kata, and not the aestethic traditional kata. I suspect this goes for Enshin as well, but I do not know for certain.

Osu That is correct
In Ashihara and Enshin we practice Kata created by Ashihara O Sensei along with the top 3 instructors including Kancho Ninomiya. As I also Practice Wado Ryu Karate, practicing Tradition Kata. Most can be found on Youtube by typing Ashihara. The Kata We practice are 'combat' kata and 98% of the techniques use a Sabaki defense. Some 'Sects' of Ashihara do also practice Tradition Kata as part of their syllabus. There are approximately 10 Organisations of Ashihara karate, although 'NICO' is the 'Authorised' original founded by Ashihara O Sensei himself. I hope this helps Osu

10? that was more than I tought.
I know of 5, maybe 6 Could you list them? And yes. Enshin has the sparring/kumite based katas too. (not the exact same, but clearly in the same spirit) Joko was no2 in the Ashihara hierarchy for almost a decade after the style was founded afterall.

10 organisations of Ashihara?
What I know of: NIKO, With Kancho Hidenori Ashihara in Matsuyama Ashihara International with Narker in SA Ashihara International with Dave jonkers, David Cook in Holland (not same as narkers org.) Ashihara in UK, ashihara.co.uk 'The Tameside Martial Arts Centre - Ashihara Fighting Karate' Ashihara Sabaki-do, in Sweden and Finland (a group av dojos, not an organisation. Connected to Higashidani Shihan, yondan NIKO) One guy in turkey may doing his own organisation. (He was kicked out from NIKO years ago.) One guy in Romania, Kicked out from NIKO. (He claimed to be the founder of ashihara karate somehow... I think he is in TSG also) offshots: Enshin Shintaikudo in Hiroshima Nakamoto sensei, one of co-founders of NIKO runs his own system in Yawatahama. Harada sensei, former shihan-dai in NIKO runs own system TSG with David Cook Could be more, but these I remember :-) Last edited by jolut; 09-22-2007 at 09:05 PM. |

Correction , Although Higashidani Shihan sometimes hosts seminars with Ashihara and Ex -Ashihara people , has he nothing to do with the Sabaki-do group .
But is he connected to the Royama organisation and the rumour goes that he wants to set up his own system .

![]() I talked to Higashidani Shihan 31/8 -2/9 (3 weeks ago) a lot as we had him in Sweden for a 3 day seminar. Sorry but he was here intoducing his new system. And as he told me, he is not longer connected to the Royama organisation even thou he is at their website as a B/C. For personal reasons he is not longer a part of that organisation since 2004. Next year in a summer camp in Malaysia, Shihan with students from Singapore will start producing a DVD. His working name of his system is Kobukan. He will change the name until next summer. He is still connected to NIKO as Kancho Ashihara asked him to continue to teach ashihara karate in Denmark. Kobukan and NIKO will be connected in the future as it seems now. Kobukan is a mix of karate (goju and Ashihara), Yiquan and okinawan kobudo Last edited by jolut; 09-22-2007 at 11:50 PM. |

This is very interesting, jolut. I thought Higashidani Shihan was independent of any styles (he also wears a plain gi and obi). I always thought that he came to Denmark to teach Ashihara, but got on bad terms with the late Kancho Ashihara. He therefore introduced Goju Ryu to the dojo in Århus (they practice Ashihara today, but he himself is not directly involved). He does teach the Ashihara-dojo in Denmark now and then, but I always thought that this was because of the good relationship between him and the various dojo as well as DAO (Dansk Ashihara Organisation). Furthermore, I have been told that he does not officially hold the title as 'Shihan', as he is not affiliated with NIKO, but people use the title simply because they respect and honour him.
If he is indeed setting up his own style, then I believe that it will be something to look out for - his lessons are always very interesting and inspiring. |

You are correct. He has not received his shihan-cerificate from NIKO. He is also independent as you said.
![]() After leaving kyokushin in '76, Higashidani Shihan traveled a lot and he finally moved to Århus, Denmark in '86 ( I think it was). The dojo switched to Goju from budo karate in '86 (because of shihan expertice, he is a yondan in goju). Budo karate was a off shot of kyokushin. The dojo switched system again and this time to Ashihara karate as Shihan also did in '88. |
