Seidokaikan rules question.
The Seidokaikan knockdown karate rules are naturaly very similar to kyokushin, but if they go into extentions rounds they sometimes put on gloves and allow headpunches. Does anyone have details about eactly WHEN gloves are put on? Is is any extention round? only in the 3rd (final) extention rounds. Only final fight in a tournament?

from what I remember, the first round is tradition karate kumite - similar rules to Kyokushin fights.

Round #2, they put on heavy gloves, and removes their gi jacket - wear only belt and gi pants, so it is sort of like a kickboxing round.

Round #3, they put on lighter gloves - can do sweeps and takedowns, but doesn't grapple.

Official rules of Seidokaikan All-Japan 1988 (excerpts)

Kumite (2mins) --- extension (2mins) --- 2nd extension (2mins) --- weight decision (he who is 10kg lighter wins) --- glove fight --- tameshiwari --- weight difference (the lighter fighter wins)

In the glove fight, fighters are allowed to use techniques such as "seikan" and "shuto".

Size of gloves:
Under 70kg: 10 oz
Over 70kg: 12 oz

I wonder if there were more then one set of Seidokaikan rules because in the 1994 Karate World Cup final between Sam Greco and Michael Thompson, they went to an extension without the gi-top. They were still fighting bare-knuckle and they had not fought in gloves before that.

well the rules are slightly different for the World events. They have the top 16 fighters compete only in the finals. The amatuers usually fight on day 1 and day 2 and then the 2 finalists from the amatuers fight the first round against the pros.....a little bit unfair in my opinion, but oh well...

I remember 1 plucky little Japanese guy that made it to the finals in 1993 and then he fought Andi Hug in Andi's first round final match. Andi dropped him with a perfect axe kick.

Osu! I have another question about Seidokaikan. Did they begin holding their first World Cup in 1993?

In June of 1991 4,500 people crowded into Tokyo's Yoyogi Hall to watch a 5 on 5 challenge match between Seidokaikan and World Oyama Karate.
Later that same year Kancho Ishii produced the Karate World Cup which brought together fighters from around the world to compete in a Grand Championship tournament in Japan. Toshiyuki Atokawa won this tournament.
