Hakuren Kaikan??
Found this video (to order, not to download)
http://budovideos.com/shop/customer/...roductid=20089
and
http://budovideos.com/shop/customer/...90&cat=&page=1

Does anyone know anything about the style involved? Hakuren Kaikan?
Obviously part of the kyokushin family, but who created it and when? Directly from kyokushin or indirectly through another splintergroup?

Well that was HARD to find info on this style. I searched "Hakuren Kaikan" in google but no good results, however I finally found their website @
http://www.byakuren.com/
It's in Japanese.

Information:
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%99%...BC%9A%E9%A4%A8

It seems that the style is actually called "Byakuren Kaikan" not "Hakuren Kaikan".

I tried my best to translate.

The kancho of the Byakuren Kaikan "Masayasu Sugihara" used to be one of the heads and a part of "Byakuren Team" in Shorinji Kempo which was led by Sou Doushin(.aka. Michiomi Nakano).
Masayasu Sugihara decided to compete in a Seidokaikan tournament to see how effective "Shorinji Kempo" can be, and he was highly ranked and came at a top position at the tournament. However due to this, he was out of the Shorinji kempo organisation, and he founded the Byakuren Kaikan in 1984.
At first, it was an international kempo organisation. In 1988 it changed to an international karate kempo ornisation due to other organisations joining.

Byakuren Kaikan is known after Kyokushin, Seido for its full contact karate fighting style.

A shorinji Kempo splintergroup that competes in knockdown? Cool! I always liked Shorinji Kempo, but wondered how it would translate to competition.
Thanks!

Byakurenkaikan sends fighters to Kyokushin All Japan Tournament every year. Actually they did pretty good, you won't be able to tell them apart from Kyokushin. They also sell martial arts equipments at http://lotus-club.com/

Osu! Dave-san, are you sure that Hakuren kaikan exisits? because the kanji(japanese) writes the same for both "hakuren" and "byakuren". I think in Japan they call it "Byakuren" see the website.

The name of the style is Byakuren Karate Kempo. Not Hakuren. I also noticed this when visiting the "budovideos.com" site.

Quite well, thanks. Perhaps because today it's VERY different from Shorinji Kempo. Only some positions and all the Ju-Ho techniques (joint locks, throwing techniques,...) remain from the Shorinji system. The rest is very close to Ashihara or Enshin, to name only 2 well known styles.

Regards.

Wellcome. Nice you found your way here. Tell your dojo mates.

Do you think you could tell us a bit more? KyokushinFX said you send fighters to the all japan open, could you supply a few names, and maybe a few other Byakuren top fighter. What internal competitions do you do? Do your rules differ from the official kyokushin knockdown rules (you mention ashihara and enshin, does that mean you are closer to their rules regarding grab&Pull&push)?

:-)

Yes indeed!

It's true. But our fighters only enter Shinkyokushin competitions, since the IKO-Matsui tournaments doesn't allow fighters from other schools/organisations.

Names... Right now I'd say Yuyu Kitajima, our current World Champion (he won our All Japan several times as well). And we also have Brent Weedman, a young and tough American fighter who won the All Japan in 2003.

An "All Japan Open Tournament" every year. We've also started a World Tournament in 2004.

They are pretty much the same.

No, we are close to them regarding the practice. I mean we also practice all the "sabaki" work.

Regards.
