Shidokan Karate
I have heard about Shidokan Karate, I don't think it has been discussed about this style before in this forum.

I've seen some of the events in the past on pay per view and am impressed by some of the fighters.

Shidokan competitions includes separate sectitions. they hold a championship where round#1 is pure knockdown karate rules in gi and without gloves, Round #2 is thaiboxing rules in shorts (worn under the gi in round #1) with boxing gloves, and round#3 is MMA rules with thin gloves (grappling& ground+ound allowed.
They also hold events with only knockdown+thaiboxing/kickboxing rules, and separate events with the different types of rules.

Shidokan HL Video of Richard Tramel
VERY Interesting. I think shidokan would be right up KYOFIGHTER's alley (a poster here on kyokushin4life). He teaches both kyokushin and muay thai out of denverContact Kicks Dojo

I have just read a piece of news that Noji Ryuta (the former japanese IKO-Matsui fighter with fuzzy hair and decending-elbowed someone's shoulder repeatedly in a tournament) is going to fight a guy from Shidokan Latvia in "PANCRASE 2006 BLOW TOUR" on 6th June.
Gambatte, Noji! His opponent: Arbocius Tiger ![]() 1999-2000 World Shidokan Open 75kg Champion 1998 European Shidokan 75kg Champion He also has some other titles and that includes kickboxing. OSU!

Dear greedy,
From the official website of "Pancrase Japan" they say he was born in Alitas of Lithuania but is a member of Shidokan Latvia. And sometimes they quote him just Shidokan Lithuania/Latvia. But you know different versions are just floating around so sometimes I cannot say for sure I have the correct answer. But thanks for your information anyhow OSU!

Heavy bag at Shidokan Honbu
押忍
not sure if anyone saw this... There was a Shidokan feature in the Isami catalog/magazine. There was a picture of a beatup and heavily taped up heavy bag in the corner of the Shidokan Honbu... It was a heavy bag that was given to Soeno san by Oyama Sosai many, many years ago. So cool that he kept that in his dojo all these years... |

Dear kyokushin dave,
In April that year Noji single-sidedly talked to the press about wishing to go indepent and leave kyokushin. He wanted to take part in other forms of comepetitions like kickboxing. And subsequently he was expelled from IKO. OSU!

Kyokushin have lost too many good fighters because of the "no pro fighting" rule.

Pancrase fired Noji
On 14th June, the company that produces the pancrase show announced the layoff of Noji Ryuta. The official explanation is "there is a reason that makes continuation of the contract difficult". OSU!

So is shidokan comparable to kyokushin techniques wise? I want to start training kyokushin but shidokan is the closest to where I live in London and would be much more convenient to attend.
Do shidokan fighters ever take part in kyokushin tournaments? If not how do they cope with the small pool of fighters available to them in places like the UK? Also do shidokan allow throws and grabbing in their knockdown rules fights? I have previous judo experience and would like to train a style that allows sweeps off a grab and clinching. |

Shidokan karate as a style is very close to kyokushin. However be aware that, especialy in the west, shidokan also do more kickboxing training, and you may find that your local shidokan dojo is realy a muaythai (or even MMA) gym, not doing any karate type training at all. More or less only associating with shidokan as a organization, not realy doing shidokan as a style. Only way to know is to go and watch a few sessions.
Shidokan fighters occationaly take part in "open" kyokushin events, and in other events held by knockdown styles. But in the west you are more likely to see shidokan fighters in muaythai/kickboxing tournaments. As for judo background. That might be very usefull since shidokan do have grappling in its training.
