I am wondering if anybody watched the 9th Open Championship live in Tokyo. If so, can anyone give their opinion on the 4th round contest between Zahari Ognyanov Damyanov (Tameshiwari: 21-20) Yoshiaki Uchida . I watched and couldn`t understand how the fight panned out. Can anybody shed some light on this particular contest? thanks

Just watched it as a refresher now.
Damayonov was falling back a little bit more than he should have, but all the time he was returning hits and blocking well not letting up or letting himself get beaten. The Uchida was more aggressive but Damayonov as said didnt let up. I dont remember the decision being controversial at all - first match saw all the judges in agreement, extension only saw one (Japanese) judge vote for Uchida. Standard stuff I thought! >_< |

Thank you Brin Sa
Brin Sa,
thanks for the reply. not rude question at all. I wasn`t questioning the result as such. I also thought it was very fair. I also watched the video again on the internet just now. I agree with you. My thought was that Uchida didn`t getting in to an expolsive rythmn because Damyonov was just in his face all the way through. He didn`t back down, and maintained a continuosly high work rate. So Damyonov is one for the future. Do you think Uchida would have been better to vary his attacks? ![]() |

At the risk of singling out any one massive group and generalising....the whole Japanese team could have done with varying their attacks >_<
Their fighters although lacking nothing in technical excellence were sadly missing any flare i felt. ps: on a side note - one aspect I feel strongly about is that their style of training/fighting is going to continue preventing them from reclaiming top seated positions in open/heavy categories on account of their size. There is no doubt in my mind that the Japanese are as tough as nails. But, when you're up against bigger (arguably stronger) fighters and you rely on blocking with your body as opposed to well...blocks...then you're up for some trouble. (To be fair there were two large Japanese fighters in the top 32, but this doesnt account for the others) Last edited by Brin_sa; 11-26-2007 at 07:40 AM. |

Take a note at these nice WT pictures from the website of European Kyokushin.

interesting point. Your saying that they block with their body as opposed to using blocking techniques; or in other words, they take the pucnhes and kicks and then get on with it. I never really thought of it like that.
I will watch more. So, do you think that in the future, on account of Uchida`s competitive size (105kg), he should do well in the next worlds and weight categories? The reason I ask this is because over the next 4 years he will have a lot more experience and a higher threshold to pain (i.e hits from the big guys from around the world). What do you think? At the moment I see him as the only realistic challenger from Japan in the future. P.s I am a 180cm 73kg kyokushin player; yellow belt. Only about a year and a half training experience. I feel my light frame will be a problem when I compete. I have some speed and some strength, but I need to know how to put on weight to make myself stronger and more competitive. Do you have any experience or ideas that might help? Thanks again |

Some pictures from the WT... quality is not that good because photos were strictly forbidden but I couldn't resist taking a couple shots.

At 177 cm and 67kg, I compete in sub 70kg and sub 75kg tournaments. At the sub 70kg tournaments, I placed as high as 2nd. At the sub 75kg events, I only get as far as 2nd round. In an open class, my current skill/strength levels would not meet the challenge presented by larger opponents over multiple rounds. |

Osu!smoothsake, were you wearing a black & white Kyokushin LA windbreaker the last day of the 9th World? If so, I may have spotted you on the Sendagaya platform.
