I think Matsui just pipped it, Matsui however nearly lost to Michael Thompson in the semis and 2 flags in Thompsons favour just before the ippon should have been enough.

I second that. I think Mastui should have been eliminated by Thompson.
And the worst thing is, Andy Hug, Admeir da Costa and Michel Wedel had to eliminate each other before one of them could meet Mastui's side...Of course I still think Mastui is one of the best techicians of Kyokushin. ![]()

I was in the dojo self training doing crunches and he just walked in the dojo. I stood up for him and he told me I can go back to my workout. I was kinda suprised because he seemed very casual. By looking at him you wouln't think of 100 man kumite or World Tournament champion he looked like a regular guy. When sparring he is like magic anticipating moves and stuff. For a fun fact he sqats like 191 Kg's

Yer he does kind of look like a normal Japanese business man. You wouldn't think he can fight in streets because of how he looks now, noone wants to mess with him.

For me: Andy Hug vs Matsui the winner is Andy!!!
Michel Thompson vs Matsui the winner is Thompson (before V round)! OSU! |

I actually had dinner with Andi Hug in 1995 when he first came over to Seidokan and he said himself that Matsui did beat him in that final. He had no reason to lie.
He was an entertaining and charismatic table guest. We even got the meal for free, as all of the restaurant staff took pics with him, and he must have signed 20 autographs in the 2 hours we sta there. |

I didn't see the fight, but I have seen video...truly the spectators were the real winners...
having said that: I know several Japanese yudansha that were there and saw the fight...to a man they said that Hug was jobbed, as was Thompson...and basically because Matsui at that point was one of Sosai's boys... but to be fair to Matsui, I trained in the AJKU, and Matsui wasn't exactly their favourite person...(probably still isn't)

Osu Sensei & Senpai,
I saw 4th World Video to see if indeed Sensei Andy Hug won over Kancho Shokei Matsui, my conclusion was Kancho Matsui showed more technique (combinations) as against Sensei Hug. Also Sensei Hug had committed a foul which would be taken against him in his final score. Just my opinion. Osu. |
