Good stuff. I've been looking for a morning routine to do before breakfast when I wake up.
I usually just run through kata and basics and do some light stretching to get the day going, but this looks interesting. ALTHOUGH I did read a book that suggested working out light in the morning gives you more energy during the day and the opposite is true if you work out heavy. It also went on to say that splitting up cardio in the mornings before breakfast and lifting weights in the evening burn more fat. Any thoughts on that? EDIT: Changed calories to fat

Dear ibuki,
"Iken" is the japanaese name for "Yiquan" from Chinese martial arts. I am sorry I am not able to explain to you the details of these exercises since I have not actually studied them. Yes you may imitate what they do, the special "dragon/tiger submitting" stances and all that but if you have not understood the breathing, the special image visualisation and other fine points then you are getting none of the benefits. I suggest you to look for books on "Yiquan" or consult people who have trained in this art if you are interested in it. OSU!

Basic Ikken is essentially assuming a stationary pose where you remain relaxed and focus on your breathing without closing your eyes. You're slightly up on the balls of your feet and you want hips aligned with your body so you'll have the best posture you can possibly get. The hand positioning varies but we do three different types: hands down by our sides but our palms facing slightly upwards, our hands held in front of us palms down as if you're standing in water and your hands are floating on the top, and the third is similar to holding a large beach ball in front of you, with your arms forming a circle in front of you. It's all about the relaxation, breathing, and posture. It's not forceful exhalations like in Sanchin either, it's deep and relaxed. I've only been doing it for a couple months now and not as consistently as I would like, but I have noticed it does make me much more relaxed and my posture in my stances and everyday life has gotten slightly better.

in tai chi your tounge should touch the ceiling of your mouth just behined your teeth directly, your legs should be a bit clawed to grip the ground ,and your knees a bit bent and then relax your shoulders and your pelvis should a bit arched to the front just like when you perform a sachin dachi relax andthen preform a bit of sloow breathing and then after a sometime in training of slow breathing you can go to forced breathin but your moves should be slow osu!!! thats all i read so when i get more info ill soon post it osu!!!!! hope you find this useful osu!!!!

A Shihan from Japan showed us this too. He described the same relaxed posture but had us visualise holding a 'fragile glass orb' loosely under your waki (lower than your armpit), between your thighs and under your chin... all while staying completely relaxed!

Dear Aunty Ichigeki,
What I have read is quite similar. The book says you have to hold a big paper balloon. You cannot break it but you cannot let it fall either. And at the same time you must imagine yourself holding a ball between your knees. I have also read that the fluid footwork of Shihan Kazumi Hajime comes from his practice of Iken (something like a zig/zag form of slowly walking back and forth?) And my limited understanding of Yiquan/Iken/Taikiken stops here. OSU!
