Anyone here train in BJJ/MMA?
Might be the wrong place for this thread but wasn't sure where to put it. MMA Karate didn't seem right to me, but if it's moved there I understand.
I have been training off and on in BJJ for the last 6 to 7 years or so, been focusing on it a lot lately and also train in "MMA" which where I train is BJJ with wrestling/judo and Muay Thai. I also first started teaching solely on my own at a brazilian jiu jitsu school, I would teach muay thai for the mma students. One of the fighters where I train is a pro fighter and comes from the same gym as Chuck Lidell. I'm just asking because I'm curious about any other grapplers here. My passion isn't BJJ but I have a lot of respect for it and where I currently live doesn't have many options. I could pay twice as much to train at a TKD school that would only give me 2-3 hours of training a week. Anyhoo, I'm training under a Royce Gracie black belt and with some pro fighters and special forces dudes that also train, it's good training. If I sometimes participate in a thread and start to vear off towards a bjj/mma angle, now you know why.

I train in Kaisho-Goshin-Budo-Jujitsu. I love it as much a I do kyokushin. Its the Japanese police art of jujitsu. Im learning it from a retired cop. I train in it alot. I always tell everyone MMA guy I meet "I never found much use for ground fighting." Theyll scoff at me. Will go one round for fun. They get me to the ground and ill choke im out...Or defend myself well tell the choke me out... It tends to be the later. lol. But afterwards they always tell me the same thing. "You said you didnt ground fight?"
And my Mathew Quigly side shows "I said I didnt find much use for it... Didnt say I couldnt do it." I know im a cocky one sometimes. Its my worst trait.

At the moment my training is more like Kickboxing: Kyokushin, Boxing, sometimes MT.
But I'm looking forward to either learn BJJ or Judo in the future. |

I did a couple of years BJJ and am keen to do more when I have more time. I was lucky to have an awesome instructor and really loved it & found my Kyokushin background prepared me well for it (esp. endurance!) I'd love to fight a Kyokushin/BJJ fight but as far as I know there's noone else in NZ that have trained in both (esp. l.w. women). We sometimes play Kyokushin/MMA once a week as part of our fight training but just for fun and to get a sense of what we should be aware of.

The judo club I was training at for a bit before I got deployed offered BJJ right after, so I would do an hour of judo then another hour of BJJ. Good training.

Most Kudo dojos include BJJ techs in their curriculum.
Unfortunately my dojo is almost pure Muay Thai in a gi, with a few judo sweeps added. So I go to a BJJ dojo once or twice a week to work on my ground game. I'm still a novice though. |

I DO jiu-jitsu 3 times a week morning time, help me a lot to teach goshin jitsu to my students.
I think is the best combination, Kyokushin + Jiu Jitsu. OSU.

Osu!
I trained in Judo for a number of years before finally walking away due to the constant removal of technique from training. (When standing armbars in Rondori went out, so did I.) I went out to train with Eric Shingu in the late 90's, and got battered. I was heavier, and he had more injuries, but his control was excellent, and I was getting caught thanks to my Judo rules game. Since then I've made a real effort to keep my head in the BJJ game, and because of that , it was only natural that we started to put together our own MMA syllabus. Since returning to the US, I've been struggling to find a good school in my area. (This may be the Bermuda Triangle of MA, and yes, the irony is the only thing that isn't lost here...) Cross training, exploration and experimentation are vital to our individual progress. I look forward to reading your posts! Osu!
