Has anyone fought friends in serious/local tournaments? I may have to fight one of my friends and I don't feel great about it. A person I know keeps telling me to get out there and beat him up as if he is noone in the tournament. osu

Hey I was just telling my kohai about how to deal with situations like this. If Brazilians or Japanese or Russians have this kind of worries then they do not have to fight in world tournaments no more because they will always meet their countrymen. You just need to remind yourself that by giving your best you are actually showing your deepest respect towards your opponent. If you try to pull punches or something you are essentially seriously insulting your opponent, and if he is a seriously enough kyokushin karateka, he is going to hate you for good if he wins the bout and knows that you have been holding back. You should develop that kind of positive competitive relationship with your friend that you two can be the best buddies off the mat and the worst enemies in a tournament.
All the best for the tournament! OSU!

I have fought with a friend of mine once....he after that showed to be not such a good friend but at the time we fought at the tournament we were friends. We gave all the best although he asked me not to do him low kicks because his legs were sored. Even though I beat him I wasn't satisfied because I didn't manage to make any KO in the tournament

My advice...if your friend is really your friend and a true kyokushin practitioner he will understand that the best man wins and it is an honor to fight your friend in a tournament...nothing wrong with competition...
You should just bring it up with him and see what he thinks about the situation! Maybe he will tell you to fight him as he were anybody else!

I have seen in the past two friends from the same dojo fighting in tournaments. Neither one asked nor gave any quarter. On the tatami you have a job to do and that is to defeat the man or woman in front of you. Before and after the fight you are friends - during the fight you are opponents.
I recall in England in the Mid 1980s the Bill and Norman Kepple (I Think thts their names) fighting each other in a tournament. |

I just recently fought one of my best friends of like 8 years in a Nationals novice final. Was sorta weird because we were both kind of wondering about how it would go. In the fight I was sure I wasnt holding back, but a shihan that was watching it said he was sure we both were....was wack

Dear Mustang,
It does not matter what your Shihan says. He was not the one who was out there punching, kicking and sweating on the mat. As long as you know you have not disgraced yourself and the people who have taught you and influenced you in your career you do not need to be worried about what the others are saying. Kyokushin is within yourself. OSU!

Kakatootoshi is right - only those on the mat really know - from the sidelines things can lokk quite different |

the truth is that in kyokushin you can be freinds with other fighters ,you can even be closer then brothers , but when you are in the ring you have to treat your freind with the proper respect as a fighter , because if you do not give it all you have you will give him the impression that you think he is a bad fighter or that you are superior to him in fighting and that may cause problems in your relationship with him/her ,and another thing all freindships should be forgotten in the fighting ring or on the mat ,osu!!!!!!

I was just saying, that maybe it was more sub conscience holding back, than saying "hey hes my mate im going to hold back"

I saw Mustangs fight & was also convinced he was holding back by the end. He worked his friend's middle section until it was 'gone' but stopped working it with about 30sec left on the clock. One more good shot & his friend would have folded & it would have been ippon. I totally believed Mustang knew he'd done enough to win and kindly spared his friend at the end. I'm gutted if it was subconcious.

Why would you be gutted? I dont understand.
I was trying to finish him off and I knew his middle section was sore, but I think I focused to much on it, rather than trying to set it up. I also believe after watchin the tape that he was holding back a little too, just from the pace of both of our first fights. I think things will be different when we fight again.

This is especially important at the big tournaments. If you know you've done enough to win a bout you can do less at the end (like you did) to preserve energy and avoid injury knowing you may have another 5 or 6 bouts ahead of you! I thought you had that already, which would be astounding for a novice... but if you can do it subconciously, that's a whole lot better than not at all. |

Oh Jill, sorry I meant that maybe subconciously I was holding back a little because we have been friends for so long, in the whole fight, not just at the end. Im pretty sure he was too.

this is not a reply to anyone, but i beleive that holding back in a fight may cost the whole thing ,and all the hard training that you have done and hours of training all will be lost if you lose just because your holding back for your freind ,i beleive that kyokushin to important to me to do that to me or my freind he/she should understand that tournaments are to see who will be the best and if he hasnt trained enough then he should get what is coming to him osu !!!!!!!!!
