It will vary from person to person. If you add up the the minimum time limit between gradings it should take at least 4 years. However with injuries it will be longer. Also if a person was to start fighting and focus on that then it will take more time again.

From the official "black book" that I got when I first signed up (do other countries give these out too?
![]() ![]() The suggested time frame for advancement is as follows. This is based on attending at least 4 hours a week in training sessions. White: 3 months Orange: 10 kyu -3 months 9 kyu - 3 months Blue: 8 kyu - 3 months 7 kyu - 3 months Yellow: 6 kyu - 3 months 5 kyu - 3 months Green: 4 kyu - 6 months 3 kyu - 6 months Brown: 2 kyu - 6 months 1 kyu - 6 months This works out to 4 years to the timing in which you would be eligible to attempt the black belt exam. Less than 4 hours per week, would push back the timing in which you would be allowed to take exams (based in each dojo's interpretation of your growth). Like Bloke mentioned, injury would affect the timing also. vapor |

Vapor,
I've never seen a black book like that before. It's interesting that they have a road map to getting your shodan, I think most other places don't have that. |

Yeah we don't get a black book, but there is a (.pdf) of the criteria for the grading criteria 10th kyu - Shodan.
3 - 4 years does sound about the average. Possibly closer to three if you have experience in a martial art comparable to kyokushin.

Vapor,
That book is sweet. I'm really rusty on my kanji so it wouldn't do my much good. Can you summarize what the content of the book is besides the path to kuro obi and the dojo kun? |

What do you want to know specifically?
I put a brief explanation underneath each picture...?! There are 10 legal terms in the membership section... There are 20 principles in the Dojo Etiquette section... If you could specify, I will try to comply with an answer! vapor |

In Japan where I was training, if you are an adult you could double grade easily without worrying about "stripe / tip" too much. That's up to yellow belt and from that onwards you are usually expected to recieve a tip.
