Humble, in the gutsiest kinda way
I come onto your forum after seeing a video on YouTube with the web address. I have trained for four months trying to toughen up using a large, long wooden sword (5'5" total, 16 lbs, 11" handle) and can almost use the 4' 10", 60 lb, 14" handle one I crafted by hand.
I have also been into meditation for some time now I come to you humbly... I cannot imagine a more fitting martial art for myself. I have offended other places with my training style, and i do not know if you will agree with me, but i want advice and i want to learn Kyokushin. I have suffered trough sore joints, pulled muscles, strained tendons and torn skin for my love of Martial Way, and the only reason i stop is for my health, not because I want to. When i can, i hope to join a school, but i have no money and live at home, and live nowhere near one, I'm sure. I ask until the day comes that i can join a school, that i can be directed to any resources that would allow me to learn at home... I will look into those DVDs mentioned somewhere on this forum. I plan to spend the time to read through this forum, I also plan to set up a shrine on April 26th, two months and a week from now, and meditate upon it. Thank you. I am very relieved to find this forum.

Welcome to the forum. There are a lot of reference materials, and information that you can use to educate yourself. There are also a lot of knowledgeable members that can share their experience with you. Just ask!

Thank you Azimuth, but I am afraid I may not be able to go any time soon from where I live. Vapor, thanks. What i seek, if possible, is something illustrated that I can learn from at home. I doubt it could add much to the number of injuries or scars, no matter how poorly I do... I count a dozen scars on just my left hand, and a half-dozen smaller on my right. Nerve damage, even lost half a fingernail permanently to a table saw... Sorry, I ramble. Just to share a story... I asked this guy who was an americanized Japaneses about Kyokushin... He described it as traditionless, valueless, army-istic, that seeks physical power without much concentration to technique... Well, i knew there was more to it on that, but i was bought at that, despite that he spoke of Kyokushin as a dishonorable art. I see in my own eyes that it has traditions and values, just not flamboyant and overbearing ones... Anyways, i was wondering whether an illustrated guide, sorta like the tao of jeet kun do, is available. I find books mean more to me than videos... I feel naturally closer to the old ways of learning. Mixing videos and martial arts seems kinda weird.

If you like on amazon.com and look up Mas Oyama you can find a lot of books written by him.
Mas Oyama Books Mas Oyama's Essential Karate 2 Used and New starting at the low price of $6.78 not including shipping. Hope that helps... Remember karate is about longevity. Developing scars is good, but shouldn't be a sign of progression. Especially nerve damage etc etc. Take your time... no one, not even mas oyama, became mas oyama overnight. "One becomes a beginner after one thousand days of training and an expert after ten thousand days of practice."

you will never learn kyokushin from books and videos only...
get your butt to the dojo and stop finding reasons not to go... even once a month is better then nothing...

Na! Me either! If you're serious about Kyokushin style training you need to accept that the way is long. The idea is to very slowly condition yourself so you can be strong without damaging your body. It's a slow process and takes a lot of mental strength to have the patience & endurance to pace yourself & respect your body. It's all you've got in the end.

sounds like an okay idea... I formed a plan ill try first. Its not quite Kyokushin, but ill get a job pumping gas and join a local karate class.
ill also set up one of them makiwara things, Cuz i tell ya, a deck rail may also give a good cracking sound if oyu hit it right, but it sure aint forgiving (msotly tring to make humorful talk here... anyways.)

When I was a kid I clean my instructors dog kennel to pay for classes....
If you wish so much to train then get into any dojo and learn..... Close your mouth and open your mind! |

Better to train under supervision than to train by yourself .
Its very difficult to change wrong habits i.e. incorrect hand position wrong foot stance , bad defense etc ... Where there is a will, there is a way ...

Training on your own is for after you have learned the basics from a competent instructor.
And even then it is only to be done as a complement to qualified instruction by a teacher. It can never replace it.
