Not a "?" most will answer with any type of sincerity...
Though blackdog & azimuth did open up to you a little...hahaha

Karate is seen as Budo, and though the skills and technics are their in the Kata and kihons I doubt very much that anyone trains or teaches to "kill". But I'm sure if family or friends lifes depended on them to act most would without hesitation, but to act or to train with zealous ambition to kill NO!!!

The first rule of Kyoukushin: Avoid/walk/run away from a conflict.
Many (if not all ) of the kihon we pratice could kill another human being!
I would NEVER use any of the training I have recieved to hurt anyone.
Tournaments excluded. Having said this I would not hesitate to use lethal force if no other choice was left to me in a situation where I or someone I love was in danger. Too many people view Karateka as violent individuals.
We must work together to change this perception. OSU!

I heard about the "karate ni sente nashi " rule ( a karateka never starts a fight)
that it can be interpreted as don't start it but strike first . Before your opponent does and overwhelms you

That site led to a very funny internet trail Shokei....

Ninja's rock - hilarious.

Did you read the hate mail? Some of it was even real apparently!

Don't you just love the net? And how some people think just 'cos it's on the net, it MUST be serious?

Well, that killed half an hour of my day......

Killing truthfulness
An interesting thread.

when advising people about choosing a style or instructor, if Kyokushin is not around, I always suggest a few styles, and suggest that they attend a few classes as an observer.

There are a couple of things that I call "red card infringements" in instructors, and advise people to walk away. One of those infringements is an instructor who claims to be teaching a technique that will definitely kill.

This raises sooooo many issues.
The first issue is the honesty of the instructor. How do they know it will definitely kill? How many times have they done it? One death? Two deaths? And they are not in jail as a serial killer??? At best, they are passing on hearsay. At worst, they are just making it up because they think it will impress.

The second issue is the safety of the advice. There are so many variables in the effect that a blow will have. The angle, speed of delivery, skill of karateka etc etc. What happens if a person with little training steps into a situation believing they have the power to "kill". They'll get mashed, most likely.

The third issue anyway is the ethics of teaching "lethal" techniques. If an instructor truly believes that a technique is lethal, then this is not information that should be glibly handed out in an open class. It should be imparted to trusted students, who will use the knowledge wisely.

So...my advice is, beware any instructor who claims to be teaching you how to kill.

Karate was designed to basically defend but when the time came it was used to kill. As my sensai told me, Shotokan was made for people to defend/kill becuase long time Japan outlawed the sword or something like that, and the people when attacked would have to defend themselves. It is also a fact that karate was used in the battles when the weapons where gone, which ended in hand to hand combat and death to a person. Basically as i have read around Karate was an art designed for war, to answer your question yes it was, and i guess still is ( never know ).

ah,
Te was developed to defend the ones that they where designated to protect... the king, the court, the villages etc.

Karate was never developed as an art for war

I think a bit more research is needed...
