Do you believe that an instructor who can/will "beat you down" is an accurate sign?

Sounds like "cobra kai" from karate kid....

I'd take a different view - I think that the key element of a sensei is someone who can build you up - skillwise that is. a Sensei who relies on beating down will soon run out of capacity to help you. The goal of all good sensei's is to have their students surpass them. And out of class -they can be boring as, for all I care. But I do agree that they shouldn't take themselves too seriously outside the dojo.

i want a sensei that punishes you when you do something wrong
and is just chill outside of class
but he needs to be tuff on you durring training u to push u
