Last week I went and watched Kyokushin for the first time - the intensity, bag work, and hard sparring were completely different than what I had seen in my limited experiences in Shotokan when I was younger. I watched the one white belt there roll with the upper belts in Kumite, and thought to myself, damn there is no waiting months or years to start fighting in this club. So I came back the next day, nervous a bit, anxious, and wondering what was going to happen during my first class.

It turned out that it was an "easy" class, as Sensei put it, because it was only myself and two other white belts. But he laughed a bit as he said it because he could see how out of breath I was afterwards. We didn't do any Kumite in that class, so I was thinking perhaps it would be a be a while until I started. But very next class Sensei tells me (a sole white belt amongst blue, brown and black belts), "put on your pads." And thus began my formal introduction to Kyokushin Karate.

How did the kumite work out for you?

The Kumite actually turned out fine, it was a strange feeling to hit someone and be hit since the last time I did anything like that must have been on the playground in middle school or something like that . The next morning I realized that I need to start seriously working on my ab muscles haha I was quite sore. But now I think I'm hooked. Osu.

When I started training kyokushin I had just relocated. I found out there was a kyokushin dojo just 2 minutues walk from my new home. I had been training shotokan for a year and liked it a lot but decided to try this style since it was so close (I had also found a shotokan dojo further away).

I was actually not very impressed at first. I trained in a group with only white belts and because of my previous karate experience, I did not find the trainings as challanging as the others.
I also thought (and still think) that the kyokushin kihon is not as powerfull as the shotokan kihon. And we used to spend a lot of time on kihon.
But the trainings did never the less often have a level of intensity I liked. We were also alowed to train once a week with the more advanced members (I was the only white belt from my group who ever did that) and I loved those trainings.

I was promoted to orange belt a few weeks ago and now I'm always exited and looking forward to going to next training.
