anything less than twice a week will make it really hard to progress. If someone can't commit to 2 classes a week, unless they are very motivated and disciplined to practise every day away from the dojo, I don't think it is worth it.

Couldn't agree more; less than twice and you'll find it hard to retain anything and find yourself covering the basic's again and again and probably get bored. Stamina is lost within 48 hours so you should be doing something every other day to progress as an athlete.

Not always the case...

Yes the more you go the more you "should" learn, but understand this, their are several elements to your learning
1) you
2) the dojo
3) the teacher
4) the other students
5) equipment available and if used correctly

all comes into play (quick round up of what or can come into play)

The dynamics of the dojo, the teacher and their knowledge and their ability to pass on knowledge. How well do the other students make you feel, help you out do they work as a group or individuals ...

One could write a small book just on this alone, so yes one should take as many classes as possible that fit you and your learning curve.
If you take more classes than you can handle you'll end up cutting corners during class and will start to go back wards.
Also if you attend classes that are just not helpful, challenging etc, this to will cause the back wards effect. Bordom is the worst enemy, remeber that!!!

It is a balance in the beginning, as a new student (first 1 1/2) you will make many changes and experience much change in body and mind.

Find the balance, find the learning curve (remember to adjust as the curve grows) and walk into every class with a open mind.

Twice a week i guess is the 'norm' so to speak. It depends what you want to achieve from your training and how often your chosen dojo trains. My dojo is twice a week although i can only make it 1 time on weds. I train at 2 other dojo's so training 4 times a week, but im into constantly training because im a fighter. Train twice a week in a dojo that's good and go do another exercise such as swimming, running or whatever is your thing As long as you exercise 3 times a week you should maintian and develop a good standard of fitness.
