Weight Classes in Kyokushin Tournaments
I was wondering if anyone could give me a general idea of weight classes in Kyokushin style tournaments. I know every one can be different but if anyone has a general idea that would be awesome.

I am looking to get into some tournaments in the future so i am just looking for some ideas and this place seemed to be a good place to ask.

Generally speaking its as follows for men:

Lightweight - under 70kg

Middleweight - 70 to under 80kg

Heavyweight - over 80kg

In recent years I have seen a superheavyweight category come in and thats over 90kg.

Normally are so divided:

- until 70 kg (lightweight)
- from 70 to 80 kg (middleweight)
- over 80 kg (heavyweight or open class)

Anyway, there are some tournaments, like it was the World Championship before Sosai Oyama passed away, where there's only one category: Open.
According to Sosai Oyama' s way of think, for fix the absolute power karate and the champion of course, it need to fight in one category that comprend all the fighters.
Nowadays, some World Championship of some Organization, fighting according Oyama's tought.

See bloke and Andy83īs posts above. Also Ladies are usually divided into
under 50 kg
50-60kg
over 60kg
And a open weight class.

The superheavyweigh (90+kg) class Bloke mention is a recent addition, and only a few tournaments use it. It is not part of the old kyokushin rules, but I expect it to become more common.

Thanks for answering that question. As far as the belt/ranking thing goes i take it the open is pretty much open.. but are there some where it is divided in ranking?
