Hi billycrash - while you are waiting for someone with that info to come along why not pop into our introductions section and start a thread telling us a little something about your self.

Hi Billycrash

I cant help you with turnaments in arizona. Its literally on the other side of the world from me.
But here is a basic breakdown of the standard competition rules (there are plenty of variations of it).

Protective equipment.
Protective cup -required.
Mouthguard (english?) is allowed but optional.
Ladies use chest guard.
Thin gloves and leg protectors may be used in some local events or for juniors, but are strictly banned in international rules.
Handwraps/taping of the hands are only allowed with approval of the oficial competition medic.

Allowed techniques.
Any and all punches and elbow techniques below the neck, except to banned targets. The head is NOT a valid target for punches or elbows. If you want to try one-finger punches to the body, go right ahead and try. few does, fewer succedes.
Any and all kicks or knee, anywhere except banned targets. The head is a valid target.
If you want to try any spectacular movie style kick, go right ahead. few does, fewer succedes.
Any throw/sweep where you dont grab the opponent. You dont get any points for the actual sweep/throw, but if you follow it up with a attack WITHOUT ACTUAL CONTACT (only time in knockdown karate) you may get a wazari. Its very unusual that the judges really gives out points for it, though.

Banned targets.
Throat, spine, joints (read front of the knee joint), groin.

Banned techniques.
Grabbing and holding the opponent -even for a short period (like for a throw, grabbing a head to knee it or similar stuff). Basically there is no holding for any reason (although there tend to be some in clinch anyway -depends on how forgiving the ref is).
Sometime the competition allows hooking -reasoning that a hook is not HOLDING.

Points and scoring.
if you render your opponent defenseless (by knockdown or just incapacitating him standing) you get 1/2 point. (wazari)
If you knock him down or incapacitate him for longer than 3 seconds you get a full point and a win. (Ippon)
2 wazari IN THE SAME ROUND is the same as a Ippon (=win).
If one fighter only has a wazari at the end of a round, he wins.
If you are equal in point (both have wazari) at the end of the round, the judges will either give the win to a fighter that has visibly dominated the fight, or order a extra round.
There can be several extra rounds.
After a few extra rounds the fight may be decided by tamashiwari or weight.
If it is still tied there are more extension rounds where the judges MUST decide a winner.

Tamashiwari and weight.
Before the finals, there are a tamashiwari (breaking), where the fighters are required to break a MINIMUM (its allowed to try for more than the minimum) of tiles in 4 ways. After a few extra rounds without any winner, a fighter who has broken more tiles will be given the win.
In open weight tournaments, a fight that has gone into several extension rounds without a winner, may be decided by the scales. Both fighters are ordered to be weighted, and if there are more than 10kg difference, the lighter fighters wins.

Time.
First round (the ordinary time) are 3 minutes.
Extra rounds are 2 minutes.
Ladies have slightly shorter rounds, but I forget exactly by how much.

Behavior/actions that are banned.
Unsporting/impolite behaviour -people that have behaved like a jackass have been known to be disqualified.
Retreating. Stay within the fighting area or get warnings and, eventually, point deduction.
Pushing your opponent away with open hands (pushing with knuckes are ok)

Things for you to remember as a wadoryu fighter interested in fighting under kn ockdown karate rules.
#Lowkicks are very popular. Learn to block with the shin and live with the pain.
#fights DONT stop after the clean first hit, and who gets the first hit dont matter. The only thing that matters is the punch/kick that downs the opponent.
#Expect plenty of close-infighting and knees.
#There is no such thing at excessive contact.
#speed is good, power is better.
#knockdown fighters tend to be vulnerable to straight punches to the face. But if you forgett the rules and exploit it you will get disqualified.
#Point sport karate guard will get you knocked out by a kick.
#Most blocks are only good at long distances, not close in. Close in, "wall" up, move around the opponent of of his attack, or learn to absorb his punches.
#You dont have to stand toe-to-toe and slug it out, but if you retreat too much the judges may give the fight to the opponent on the ground that he is dominating you.

Don't know how helpful this will be, but...

I'm actually from Scottsdale but I've been living in Japan for the past 3 1/2 years. When I was back home for Christmas last year I visited a Kyokushin dojo in Phoenix, and the shihan said that there are no tournaments in Arizona. None whatsoever. I don't know for myself whether that's true, I'm just repeating what he said. :/ Good luck in finding one!

I heard that in order to be able to compete in sabaki challenges you need to be a fighter from their organization? Ashihara? Enshin? Kyokushin fighters may not be able to enter..

well i dont think that is correct. i looked at the aplication online and it just said if u have not competed before in sabiki chalenge then you have to send in a 5 minute video of yourself training and hitting the bag and a bio about yourself. then from then they well get back to you to lett you know if they want you to compete in there show

Well there pretty much arn't any kyokushin tournaments in arizona however there are about 3 or 4 schools.

The one I go to is Arizona Personal Protection Academy (hope i dont get in trouble for spamming but hey the guy asked)

And I think kyokushin fighters can fight in the sabaki tournaments.

You would need to talk to the Sensei for setting something up. But im sure he would be open to it.

But I cant speak for the dojo its all up to the Sensei.

Billycrash-san--

I've been to the dojo on 35th and Glendale and I very highly recommend it. I attended a class there in December of last year and it felt exactly like taking class here in Japan. Hioki-sensei is a really nice man and a great martial artist. Definitely check it out!

Ok i went down to the school were hioki sensei teaches. i trained there from 630 to about 900pm. over all the training in general was good and i did pick some things up. Hioki sensei is a very nice and is easy to learn from. something i did not like though is that there were not any students there that had any experiance and were all pretty green. i did spare for about 20 minutes with Hioki sensei, we just moved around lightly and respected each other. i am going try training there one or two times a week and see how that goes and i hope to see some students show up that are a little more skilled. i would really like to get some practice and try and compete in a knockdown or sabaki challeng tournament, but im not sure if this is going to be the place to get me there. i hope it is though because the sensei seems like a real good guy. i will definaly be back for some more training to see what the path might have ahead.

I'm glad you had a good time at the dojo and I'm happy to hear that he remembers me! My name is Lauren, and I was introduced to his dojo by an acquantaince of my mother's, a yellow belt fellow named Ryuuta. Maybe you'll meet him too one of these days?
