![]() Hi everyone, this is my first post so i thought id say Hi and that im really glad to have found thos forum. ![]() So basically iv just started Kyoushin Karate!. Im almost 19 but was unable to do it as a child as it wasnt where i lived. But now i have the opportunity and im going to take full advantage of it! At the moment im planning on training 2 - 3 times a week. I was just curious as to how long it takes to get from white - black belt. I dont plan on rushing anything i was just wondering what sort of time frame it is. Also if anyone could please explain the system of the stripe on your belt? I read (on wikipedia ) that after a grading you may get a stripe on your belt instead of getting a new colour. From what i see our Dojo grades 3 times this year for white - intermediate. and 2 times a year for advanced. does that mean ill be getting 3 new colours next year? Thanks alot. sorry if i have mad any mistakes im new! ![]() |

Hi Imarobot
I ll try and answer your questions here but in the meantime why not pop into the Introductions section and start a thread so we can all welcome you. How long from White to Black? If you focus on gradings only and dont get injured then maybe as little as 5 years - but as you say no rush is there? Different organisations use slighlty different grading systems - we dont use stripes except on Dan grades so I cant help you there im afraid but im sure there will be someone who can. Enjoy the training - I started at 19 and its been an incredible journey.

Osu and welcome to K4L!
Regarding the stripes, they are simply there to show a rank between belts. Generally ranks go from 11th kyu (white) to 1st kyu (brown belt with black stripe) then 1st dan. This may of course vary. Let's say you gain red belt at 10th kyu. At 9th kyu, you will gain a blue stripe, meaning you are ranked above red belt, but not yet a blue belt (8th kyu). Many beginners believe that the stripes are less valued than a new belt - this is however not true. I hope that explains it. Meanwhile, we have a tradition to encourage new members to introduce themselves. So why don't you create a thread here and tell us a little about yourself? ~ Nix
