Hello Everyone,
I am completely new to Kyokushin karate and need some help. I am above 30 and would like to know if it is ok to start training from this age. Before I visit a Dojo I would like to physically prepare myself for the training. I have been fairly good in college level sports like soccer and badminton but have never taken any martial arts oriented training. I need your help on preparation for the same. Best regards, Jay |

You are never to old to start. I am 30 myself right now i have been training in Kyokushin Karate for about 8 years. I have also studied Japanese ju jitsu before training kyokushin for about 4 years. From all my experiences in the martial arts Stamina & Endurance seem to be the hardest thing for most Martial artist who are starting out. What you have to do to get ready to started is run. Go jogging, develop your stamina & endurance and be really for some pain and give it your all. That all you have to do. At first it will be hard but if you can get past the first 1st months you will be able to go all the way

Well, gee, I sure hope it's okay to start at 30. I started fresh, fresh, at 38! And, wow, I"m still 38! (And, gee, my avatar has a black belt and white hair, when really, it's the other way around! I believe in those vision boards, ya know!) At any rate, the reason why I hang in in my class is because my cardio is on. I teach spin classes and a light cardio weight lifting class. Since i have the endurance, I can keep up. Since I have some co-ordination, I can learn. You are fine! And, believe me, people love beginners because that one person is now not a beginner anymore.

Welcome to the site, 30 definately isnt too late to start, no age is really. As pointed out by Kareyn, you might just need some cardio when first starting out, the classes tend to be pretty fast paced and you can end up running out of puff. I wouldnt worry too much though, most instructors are understanding of this so just have a quick chat to him/her before starting your class - they will know this will improve with time. And most importantly have fun!

Osu!
Welcome to the Forum! Not only is 30 a perfectly good age to start Karate, you have another 50 years of training in which to get into good condition. ![]() Osu!

Welcome to the site, and to the beginning of your journey!!
I too would suggest looking at your stamina and base endurance levels, to try to improve those! Hard to concentrate on what is being taught, if you are panting like a dog on a hot summers afternoon trying to get your breath!! (been there....done that!) vapor

Welcome to the forum and as you can gather from the above posts the answer to your first question is a resounding NO! I returned to Kyokushin after a long break about 3 years ago at 36, I was in quite bad shape but this is the way I approached it - go and give it a go, if it's a dojo hey will tell you not to try too hard, won't push you more than you're ready for and once you been a few times you'll work out what you need to work on and then you can ask for advise if you still need some. Welcome to Kyokushin, I hope you realize you just signed up for life

Oso.Thanks a lot everybody for your kind guidance.
I am joining the Dojo in October and these one and a half months as advised by you all I am going to prepare myself by improving my stamina. I have been running for the last 1 week and will try to increase the distance that I am able to cover now (1 km up and 1 km down in 14 minutes with a 5 minute break after the first km.)It's a slow start but I will get better. Thanks again to all.Your inspiration was much required. |

Dear Jay78,
Welcome to Kyokushin and you are not too old to train. Do not worry about your stamina as you will be taught to build up different kinds of stamina for Karate in your training. By the way I would suggest you to work on your flexibility (leg splits). OSU!
