Question Gi too big?
Osu,

I finally got my Gi but i think it might be too big. Where should i be wearing my pants? If i wear them the same place i wear my jeans and casual clothes they go under my feet about halfway the length of my foot. (hope that makes sense). if i have the waist kind of near my belly button they go down to my ankles just nicely. Is that where i should be wearing them?

And the top just feels too big to me. Iv trained in it once and no one said it was too big or anything and one of our shodans helped me put my belt on and he didnt say anything.

Osu.

Is it a 100% cotton or a canvas Gi? because it will shrink a fair bit, you'll need to give it a hot wash and stick it in the drier if you have one. That will shrink it down to its correct size first go.

Pants, I wear mine above my hips and tie them so they cant slide down. So yes, above normal height.

Hopefully that helps.

mmm, I'd wash it in cold water first to see how much that shrinks it...
If it fits after cold water wash then never wash it in hot water. In fact I've never washed any gi in hot or warm water only cold.

As for where to tie your pants, any place that you feel comfortable in.
Where should your pants drop at, again any place you like them to be, I like my pants just ticking the floor.

Pants can be from floor to mid point to knee.
As for the jacket again this is a personal thing, I have several jackets of different sizes that I use for different events, weather and training....

Be creative, but keep it clean!!

Touching the ground gets annoying for me, just around the ankle seems to work though.

I don't know how the kids in your neighborhood would define this, but the kids in my neighborhood have their pants hanging from mid butt cheek. I simply don't understand this fashion statement and would hate to see it in the dojo.

Osu,

Thank you very much everyone. (Smoothsake: lol i dont wear my pants on my butt. >< Im just not used to having it pants up near my belly button.) Tho it feels ok and they are at the perfect length when i have them like that so all is good. thanks for everyones replies.

The top still feels a bit big to me i think i might have been 1 size smaller but its not a big deal i want to get a bit bigger anyway!

Osu,

Thanks again!

Well, I can remember the gi pants almost up to the knees...
As well when bell bottom pants first came in how my parents did not like them and found them offensive???
Though for them being depression kids almost anything was. I can also remember my dad complaining about long hair on guys " can't tell if its a girl or a guy"....
So though we may not like it each generation did things a bit different to offend the adults.
Hell I went through several and now look back and wonder on a few myself.

Even if the pants are half way to the buttocks, the jacket should cover it.
Though I was being a bit general and reasonable in my comment.

My pants also had to be worn up around the belly button to get the length right, i couldnt stand it, i couldnt stand the draw strings either....lucky me my mum can sew, so i had her shorten the length of the legs and put elastic in the waist
thanks mum!

I think you will find that it will fit better when it has been through the wash a couple times!

Wash and dry a few times, then worry about it. If you still don't like the pants, don't be afraid to hem them to the length you want. I've got some that I did myself-not exactly a pretty job, but nobody can see it (I just folded them up on the inside and sewed them in place). I always roll up the sleeves on my jacket as well.

While waiting for your Gi to shrink and experimenting with cold and then (if you need it) hot washes, you can roll the waistband to shorten the height of the pants. This works well with drawastring or elastic waist gi pants. Many children and women who have trouble fitting traditional sizes do this in my classes (children because they will grow and eventually fit, women while deciding how much to alter). I usually do this with my new gi's as I find the good 100% cotton ones shrink a full size in 2-3 washes so I roll the waistband until they shrink down to size fully.

My Gi was too just perfect when I got it a few months ago. Then I shrunk about 8 inches around my waist. Now its too big even after some serious hot washing and hot Dryer action lol!

I gotta get another one soon but for now I just have my pants up to my belly button.
