A sub-forum for learning Japanese language?

I thought it would be nice to have a forum where people can ask about Japanese language/culture and learn. Being Japanese myself, I will try my best to help. We also have vapour who curently lives in Japan!

Nice idea. Can anyone clear up a Japanese etiquette question too please?

I'm only a shodan & Uncle is a yondan but when a Japanese Shihan visits he & his wife call us Sensei & Shihan. I though a Sensei was a 3rd dan & a Shihan was a 5th dan. Is it not so clear cut? Maybe they call Uncle Shihan because he's been training longer than the Shihan? Do they call me Sensei because I'm his wife or because we are their hosts/the dojo operators? Or maybe something else - I dunno?

I think they are being very polite since you are the host of the dojo, and also being a wife of sensei(yondan).
