i`ve thought about this alot and my considered thoughts are....the most important thing to put across to people who are attending "6 lessons" is they are not going to be turned into some sort of killing machine because they`ve paid a few quid.
the idea of the class is to create awareness of situations and perhaps give the confidence to ESCAPE...nothing more!! |

Totally agree hasbeen, self-defence starts with awareness - no point being the baddest P4P MMA champion if someone can king hit you with a beer mug!

this is a good topic because i have had more than five run ins with different people, Some on the road and some through people hearing my accent and not liking it. One happened last week as we went for a weekend trip. So in saying all that i really train hard not to say it's kyokushin which really pisses me off but i have no control of that, But i am training and am prepared for those times when someone attacks.

Osu! Brad,
Someone seriously not liking the accent? Are we sure this isn't because some young lady does like it, and an angry young man is taking exception? Osu!

osu Dent, that could have happened atleast one that i know of but the rest i am not sure of. It is all crazy stuff somtimes as there is crazy people all over the world who like to voice thier opinion. And somtime if it's about me i get a bit peeved. But one time i was sticking up for a handy cap person, And the guy was in no way able to defend his self so i put my five cents in to help him out. This is one of the reasons i just keep training but i do need to find people like your self and the other seniors to help bring out that martial art, to bad you guy's are so far away.

Hasbeen is spot on - awareness is really important.
I worked as a doorman in a pub in Dublin about 14 years ago. It was an ok pub no real problems but it was the only one for miles around with a late licence so we did get some regular trouble from people who cant handle their gargle. After a while I became attuned to when trouble would start. That has stayed with me and I have walked out of pubs as I could just tell that something was going to Kick off. The problem is thats hard to teach.

1) Full contact tournaments - the adrenalin while not the same as a street fight is higher than the dojo or even semi contact fighting - some one really really wants to knock you out - real enough for me, it was enough to stick me to the floor first few times around. 2) 'reality' training - there's lots of advice about this around and I have a few experiences but the basic idea is always the same ; to raise the fight or flight instinct to where we can use it to or advantage rather than it turning us into a frozen wreck. As a method of cross training you can also do other activities which create the same or a similar rush, bunji jumping, rock climbing, motorsport anything; each to their own - whatever gets your calves feeling empty and you palms clammy. ![]()

Agreed in full, TMD. Putting pressure on the system is vital. The feelings and sensations being experienced should be explained though, so we can learn how to use them for our benefit. Osu!
