Shihan Bobby Lowe's DVD
Hi guys, welcome to new forums. I'm thinking of purchasing a DVD/VHS of Shihan Bobby Lowe's self-defense for the purpose of grading. Is it worth it?
Does anyone know where to get it? I just had a search in google bt failed to find it. Osu! Last edited by kyokushin4life; 06-18-2006 at 08:36 AM. |

It is available from budoshop:
http://www.budoshop.co.jp/QuestVt/KSVT-E3.html at 6.500 Yen I do not think it is realy useful in gradings though. For me it more a interesting but obsure technique source.

I own it, that’s Ok but I think, if we have a good Sensei, we don’t need the Shihan Bobby Lowe DVD old fashioned techniques.
I think that a good Bunkai application is better and works more efficiently than the complicated techniques of Shihan Lowe. In real fighting self defence we don’t have any time to think, just act fast, direct, strong and brutal. The method KISS is the better one: Keep it simple stupid! Regards and OSU! |

Obviously you have never been to Hawaii to train with Shihan Lowe, because you certainly wouldn't talk like you do. If you were to take the time to read "Advanced Karate" most of the techniques that Shihan Lowe teaches are in that book in one form or another and were taught to him by Sosai Oyama himself. To call his techniques old and useless shows me that you really don't now true Kyokushin, by this I mean not just tournament fighting. Having been on the recieving end of Shihan Lowe's "old" techniques many times, let me tell you that they are extremley effective. The senior belts in the video have all been training at least 40 years and continue to train and teach, so I would suggest that before you comment further on this matter take a trip to Hawaii, attend a couple classes and oh ya beforehand tell Shihan Ishida or Sensei Oyama what you think of their "old style" then come on here and tell us how you made out. As far as pre-rehersed goes, is that not what we do, train the same technique over and over again till it becomes second nature. As far as bunkai goes, many of the self-defense techniques that Shihan teaches are bunkai from the various kata. Watching a video and reading a book then commenting on what the most senior person in Kyokuhin teaches without spending the time to train with him? I would tell you what I really think but then I wouldn't be allowed back on this fourm. I apoligize if this is a little harsh, I just get a little emotional when people talk down about Shihan Lowe and what he teaches.

osu, anybody has itīs own opinion - thatīs ok. i agree with you. for me it would be interested, to get the original kataīs and bunkais of kyokushin. there has been to less written down about karate in the past centuries, so we know nearly nothing about the forms and katas. i think it would be great and honorable for anyone to train with shihan bobby lowe. but for most people a trip to hawaii would be to expensive... ![]() i own the video and the book. ![]() ![]() |

I think the first guy who commented on the methods of Lowe Shihan did not intend anything personal BUT this is KYOKUSHIN and a SHIHAN is a SHIHAN so when we pass judgments try to be more tactful. I can imagine how the students will feel if their instructor is called "old fashioned" even if this word does not seem to do much harm in other contexts (like a movie review for Blockbuster).

OSU,
I think some of the above posters need to show more respect. Shihan Lowe was the first person to open a Kyokushin Dojo outside of Japan ans was one of Sosai's first students. He knows more about Kyokushin than any of us probably ever will and he is one of the only 8th dan's issued by Sosai (Who else did Sosai issue this rank to? Another thread perhaps but I am curious to know). Since he is very elderly now, he is trying to pass on the parts of Kyokushin that are not regularly practiced, or that have been dropped from most of the sylabuses over the past 30 or so years. This effort to preserve Kyokushin history should be appreciated, not disrespected even if you don;t find it all to your liking. As an FYI to those of you who are not park of IKO1, Goshin-Jitsu technoques are now an official part of senior belt grading requirements, and Shihan Low's techniques are expected to be known. This along with the Tekki Kata's Bassai-Dai kata, Happano and soon to be official part of the syllabus three bo Kata, and tonfa kata. Therefore this teaching may have more importance to some of us than others. ![]() |

Well put Deaken. I agree Shihan Lowe wants to see the parts of Kyokushin that have been negelected over the years since the advent of Knock Down Tournaments brought back to the main stream training. Shihan has always maintained that tournament fighting is such a small part of your Kyokushin journey that when it is done you need other things to focus on and teach, thus the goshin jutsu and the kata. He has not just started this in the last few years, this has been an on going process that Shihan has under taken for along time.
