Has anyone ever tried using uchi/soto mawashi geri as a block? The very idea gets my eyes rolling.

I haven't, and there's no way I can see myself trying, but I have seen it done against free attacks.

IMO, I think you'd have to be in the top 1% of the top 1% to pull it off. Not that we shouldn't train for it, but that we should realize our limitations.

We've all seen it in bad movies, but I just don't think it would be very effective in real life. I would much more prefer a solid mae geri to keep the opponent at a distance, however it will not disarm a weapon. However I have blocked kicks with kicks (regular kicks, not stopping) on several occassions, but that has been purely luck and not really my intention.

Osu! Don´t think either of the above is viable, unless you are very good, or very lucky, but I do use feet blocks against kicks! If you practice at it, you can stop maybe 80% of kicks before they get above knee height - very frustrating for your opponent

I was taught this once although f I recall it was for a 'demo' so am not sure we were ever meant to actually try to use it. Always good to be taught something worthless, didn't stay there long

PS: The sketch above has reminded me of something else that I read about when living in South Africa. A traffic "incident" between 2 guys. One gets out of his car, brandishing a pair of nunchaku. The other guy calmly pulls out a gun and shoots him. Read a report about this in the newspaper there, so has a 40-50% chance of being true

Reminds me of good ole Indiana Jones. I read that it was supposed to be a long and spectacular fight, but Harrison Ford were particulary grumpy that morning, after coming down with migrene, or something. He thought fighting was ridiculous when he was packing a revolver, and refused retaking the scene. I don't know if this is true, but it's a funny scene and a good story!
