It's not the tea you have to worry about, H, just your sanity!

This ussually works like a charm.... the block break is a good idea... must remember it

Osu!

I reckon a bat break at the company softball event might also work well for the American crew.

Depends, if you've just been struck out it could just look like you're a sore looser And f you fail to break it you'd be a sore looser for sure

Yes, TMD, I think those scenarios would be a little awkward. May be a good way to start the game though. Much better than the first pitch thrown by a local celebrity! Some folks (H?) could even ask that guy from their firm to try it.

OSU DENT!! the only bat breaking i would ever get involved in concerning this person would be breaking the bat round the side of his knees................

good tip for anybody using a baseball bat, never round the head/face they might catch it and use it on you+there is also the chance of killing them......at least if you make out you are going to hit them high, then drop it around the side of their knees...they are not going to be able to run after you!!

That's where our sense of humour deviates, H. I' love to see a guy like that swing his shin into a bat. I can think about endless recounts of that moment in the bar, and the whole company gets to benefit from a good laugh.

Note to ALL: H isn't advocating the use of a bat on anyone, rather explaining what we should be aware of should we ever face one. Right, H?

I will add a different perspective to this thread---and bring it back on track!

When I was much younger, I worked for a year at a hotel in Tokyo.

As the lone foreigner, and the newest in the crew, I was often (read---daily) subjected to verbal "encouragement"...

I put up with it, and dealt with it a few years later, when I went back as a guest, and made the same guys carry my bags to my room, and turn my bed down for me...

Success is the best payback! No need for physical confrontation!!

I concur. Physical retribution is often actually not possible, and is rarely legal in this context. There is, however, no law against success.

Escaping the cycle of bullying can be horrible and costly, but it is always worth it. I worked for a dreadful but very powerful bully once. Ultimately, I resigned without another job to go to, because the bully was spreading rumours about me, ensuring that projects I was assigned to floundered, and attacking me in public forums. It was making my life at work hell, and progressively destroying my professional reputation. The more I stood up to the situation, the worse it got. I escalated it to the next-up line manager, who apologised, but basically said that they didn't have the guts to take the bully on. Leaving was the only option. That manager at least had the decency to give me a reference when I finally managed to get another job prospect, and she gave me the highest ratings possible on the reference form.

Several years later, a person reporting to that same bully committed suicide. Workplace bullying is not always a benign or slightly irritating situation. It can have profound effects.

I have found that learning to deal with physical pain in karate has equipped me better for dealing with the psychological games that this person played, but it was not a complete protection. I have wondered if I would have been the one to commit suicide were it not for that self-belief that karate has given me. Will never know.

However, I have just had a temporary promotion into a position that places me senior to the bully. That person is now afraid. It is very interesting. I can almost smell the fear when they are in my vicinity. I will behave ethically, and will not exact revenge. But I am meeting with the bully shortly, to let them know that I am watching, and this time, the line manager (me) will not lack the courage to intervene if there is even a hint of the old behaviour.

A powerful post, Seienchin. Thank you for sharing this experience with us. It seems that workplace bullying is more widespread than I had realized, and the effects can be just as devastating as those experienced by schoolchildren.

Something to consider...
