karate manga "Karate Shokoshi Kohinata Minoru"
Came across this in a copy of "Young Magazine", that was sitting on my co-workers desk (manga)
Shokoshi = little prince...
Looks like it is more of a K-1 type of background....

Let me look through it a little bit, as it is the first time for me to see this. I believe that it is also out in a paperback book series, in addition to the feature that it gets in the comic book (which has 5-10 different stories from different mangas compressed into each issue)

This manga is pretty funny. It is about a karate club of a poor ranked university in Tokyo.
Remarks: there are two gaijin in the karate club, 1 Brazilian and 1 Russian
The Brazilian is gay and he tries to have sex with Kohinata, while the Russian is a Shemale.

Welcome to the forum fallingangels. Unfortunately giving sources of scanlations, fansubs and any other similar copyright breaking activity is against the rules on K4L. Although if you were to activate PM, there is a chance that some helpful person would contact you with some informal pointers were to look.
But for now, why dont you head over to the introduction forum and introduce yourself?

Well, in my view, Shamo is still the premier Karate manga! Long live Ryo Narushima!!! The Devil of the Orient!

Shamo is pretty good at first, but when Ryo Narushima has gone to China and practicing those 'supernatural martial art', for me, it makes this manga much worse. It not 'practical' anymore.
But 'Karate Shokoshi Kohinata Minoru' still ... you know... the same as ever.

I agree that the move to chi was a little over the top in my taste aswell, but I really dig that they gave a spot to Chinese martial arts aswell.

For those interested in googleing "Karate Shokoshi Kohinata Minoru": Shokoshi can also be transscripted as Shoukoushi...
About Shamo:
I liked the part in china, though it's different from the rest, of course... What irritates me is that after Ryo's return to Japan, he seems to have forgotten the chi-stuff he learned, now focusing on MMA?! And the drawings are different, too...
I read Shamo up to vol.23, and I'm eager to read on and see the "black dogis" in action!

Well, Baki is quite good at its beginning. But the newest one is extremely bad taste...and absolutely too over. The absolute MUSCLE power.
I think you better try Kohinata Minoru first and you'll find that Baki isn't that good, anyway I still buy every issue of Baki though.
Another manga that is quite (just 'quite') good is 'Holyland' but its art work is just so-so.

lol, thanks !
Anyone out there familar with the manga called B Reaction? It's pretty much a Karate to MMA with some old school Japanese Martial Arts, it's a young hearts funny type of manga, but still worth watching.

'B reaction' is quite good but since the first volume I have not yet seen the second one, wait for such a long time.
The art work is quite good (girls are pretty sexy and good looking though).
Another manga which is good but it is about Roman Era (but exactly about martial art) called 'Cestvs' (pronounce as 'Ces-Tus'...I also do not know why the writer uses 'V' instead of 'U')

OK, having had a look at Karate Shokoshi Kohinata Minoru, I think its pretty good. The authors are obviously familiar with kyokushin or some derivative.
I really like it. (I have not gotten as far as to the gaijins entering the dojo though :-)
Another manga like it, although slightly more comical in nature, and with more trad Manga artwork, is "Full contact" フル・コン. But it is fairy new and has not started going anywhere yet. It is still just the hero learning basic punches and worrying about minor bullies at school.
Same basic story, wimp get into karate by accident and turns out to be a unpolished martial art genious.
History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi, is a fun one too. More (much, MUCH, more) comedy than realism though. Same basic story as the above. However after a while it turn into more martial art superpower manga than a martial art manga.
Dont like Shamo. Graphically and fighting realistically it one of the very best. but the "hero" is just such a bastard that I dont like it. Its more like following the progress of a villain, than the hero.
I like dark manga/anime, but I like to be able to atleast sympathize with the main character, not hoping that one of his opponents kills him soon.
