We had a Kyokushin match fight night in Wellington scheduled to have 2 tag team events, this is in preparation for the world tournament. Unfortunately 1 of the competitors missed his flight so only got to have one tag team bout and the other ended up as a round robin.
The judging was a bit iffy as the judges had no idea how they were supposed to judge the bouts, winning or loosing wasn't really the idea, it was about getting a hit out before Japan, and providing people with some entertainment.
The fights were held with 2 competitors on each team, total of 12 rounds between the fighters broken down into 3 lots of 4 1 minute rounds. Same as having 3, 4 minute rounds with small breaks within each round.
Anyway here are the links to the utube video's hope you have as much fun watching as i did competing (I doubt it, was easily the most fun I've had in my life)
Hmmm turns out I'm not allowed to post links, fights are titled Match fights 2011 - tag team and the nest 2 rounds are titled Poneke Dojo Match Fight Night

I had to potter around on some older posts and make a few comments but i hit my 15 in the end was funny reading about the older September fight night's back at Mt Vic Dojo. All posted now, hope you enjoy let me know what you think about the tag team style fight, and how you would judge it, not only this fight but also how you would try and judge a tag team event. round 1 was draw round 2 was to white and round 3 was a draw. Personally I thought we should have won round 3 due to scoring a wisari, as for the other 2 rounds I have no idea how I would have judged them hard to watch without being biased

Some good spirited fighting there NZ! And I like the concept - makes for constant excitement . As for the judging - thats not an easy job in this case!

I am going to echo FredinChina and ask for some introduction. This was an awesome set of fights!! Would love to know more about you guys, your training methods and how often these type of tournaments are held!! Could be a HUGE draw for the knockdown karate world!!!
Thank you very much for sharing!

thanks jcarmello, We train in Wellington NZ at Poneke dojo (formally mt vic dojo) we host this event every september, it's great for our novices to get out and get a guaranteed 3 rounds as opposed to getting knocked out at a tournament after the first round.
As far as training goes, no one knew we were going to be having a tag team figh until the day of the fight's, i fought in a muay thai match 3 weeks prier to this event where there was a tag team kick boxing match Shihan Gower liked the idea and thought it would be a great lead up to the world tournament.
It was defiantly heaps of fun, really enjoyed having 2 different opponents, was hard to take time and settle into picking your shots, sort of just went all in.
We have been doing a lot of 3 person sparring lately, where you fight continuous 1min rounds, alternating every minute so you are effectively fighting 2mins on 1min off, however as you get tired your opponent comes in fresh...ish keeps you on your toes means you cant get lazy or you end up getting hurt

Believe it or not I've seen tag team done for Muay Thai, Kickboxing, and MMA fights on real fight cards over the last 10-14 years. I saw Josh Barnett and Dennis Hallman, and a few other pro MMA fighters take part in such fights in the PNW area of the USA.
If they can do it, I see no reason why knockdown karate can't do tag team.

I think it would be much more exciting if they allowed limited 2-on-1 fighting like in pro wrestling!

They did for the MMA fights! I believe it was Josh Barnett's idea, because of his time with NJPW.

I've done some 2v2 or 2v1 work in the dojo, but adapting it to a competitive situation is new for me... Of course ours wasn't 'tag-team' format, we just had 3 or 4 guys in the ring simultaneously... it degraded into a bar brawl pretty quickly.

Need to incorporate some Tekken Tag Tournament in there!
Pretty cool, I wouldn't mind taking part in some of that. may make that my excuse to visit New Zeland next September.
