Looking for mae geri KO (Midori Kenji?)

A friend of mine is a MMA journalist, and we were discussing a front kick KO by Anderson Silva in the UFC, which the commentator claimed was "a highly unorthodox technique never seen before". I argued this statement, because KO by jodan mae geri happens in knockdown karate all the time. To demonstrate, I wanted to show him a spectacular KD I saw a long time ago.

It's either from the Kyokushin world tournament or All Japan. Fighter A is rushing forwards after the fight has been stopped and restarted, and fighter B steps back and then solidly plants a jodan mae geri in his face to stop the rushing fighter A.

Now, I believe the fighter performing the KD is Midori Kenji, but I remember the clip to be of decent and professional quality, so it may actually be a more recent fighter. I also sort of remember that the opposing fighter was Lechi Kurbanov, but to my knowledge the two have never fought. After the fight, the cameras followed the KDed fighter, and he was naturally very disappointed to be out of the tournament. Perhaps that was a different fight altogether.

Does anyone know which fight/fighters I am talking about, or better yet, may provide me with a link?

Thanks Bloke, but it's not the fight I am after.

The fighter initially stepped forward to meet the opponent after the restart, but seeing as the opponent rushed forwards, he stepped one step back and instantly kicked with his (now rear) leg. The opponent literally ran straight into it. It was replayed in slow motion and everything.

I also remember another spectacular mae geri KO, between a Romanian and a Lithuanian in the womens middle weight at the Ashihara world championships some years ago. The Romanian fired of her jodan mae geri to the attacking Lithuanian, whom stopped dead, took half a step back with her side to the opponent, already dazed with her arms at her side. The Romanian immediately followed up with a jodan mawashi geri, to which the opponent fell over, stiff as a board. She was even ready to fire another mawashi geri, had the referee not been quick to intervene. The Lithuanian woke up some ten minutes later, but was obviously affected, and spent the rest of the day under supervision by the medical team. She had to be assisted when called up to receive her medal, but didn't seem to understand what was happening. The medallists at either side had to support her on the platform during the national anthem of the winner. Best and most brutal KO I've ever seen.

Cheers, Steve, but what I'm looking for is jodan mae geri KOs in knockdown karate, and the aforementioned fight in particular.

Yeah, I don't doubt there is. I think I saw one or two, when I was spectating a tournament in Thailand. It only makes the "never seen before in any contact sports"-statement more outrageous. It's possible that it doesn't happen as often in MMA/UFC, as there is the risk of having your leg trapped and ending on the ground, but we see it all the time in knockdown karate, MT, K1, kickboxing and the like.

The reason I'm looking for this particular clip, is first of all because it was a good fight and I'd like to watch it again. Secondly, I might as well promote my own art when I have the chance, right?

I like this clip as there are some great kick knock outs in it - not what you are looking for but a couple of examples

about 6.35 and 7.30 in it are a couple

I know it's not the exact match you're looking for, but I'll contribute this nonetheless.

Nothing against your friend Nix............but "MMA journalist" is a specie that is spreading like a plague.......bunch of fat sedentary people that never did a punch in their entire lifes and talk about fighting, acting like "specialists".........makes me sick... (again, I`m not saying that your friend fits the description)..........

What Joe Rogan said was something like " waoh I never seen someone get KO'ed by a front kick to the face before, not just in MMA but in ANY combat sport; kickboxing, karate, tae kwon do"

Not trying to defend him, but he said he's never seen it before, he's not saying it's never happened.

But when I watched the fight and heard that commentating, I had the same reaction "there's been a lot of front kick ko's before that!".

It does exist, but it's not THAT common, let alone in MMA.

Sorry, no idea which Midori fight you are referring to, but here is a nice one in knockdown karate:
