I dropped to under 70 for an amateur MMA match just before christmas using "Dents method" and found it quite comfortable, I lost a bit more weight than AlexNorton1 wants to, but did it over a longer time.
My brother on the other hand had a semi professional match on Saturday night, with the weigh-ins the afternoon before. He cut 5+kg in one day using a sweat suit, in a sauna buried under towels. THIS WAS BRUTAL! I don't advise that at all, he says he felt fine by the time of his fight, but I don't believe him as I felt awful still and I was taking in fluids in between his sauna sessions, was wearing trunks not a suit, was not in the sauna for the full sessions and didn't sit in the hottest part of the sauna like him.
We both agree that it was too much for him to lose in one day, by the time the scales hit 77kg(the fight weight for him) he could barely stand, I had to dress him. It was horrible!
Do knockdown tournaments generally have same day weigh-ins or do they take care of all that stuff the day before?

It depends on the tournament... at the BKK Open you can weigh in the evening before at the tournament official hotel.
At my Scottish tournament it is possible to weigh in the day before at the hotel I am staying in.
many tournament though are weigh in on the day

I've had success with the same method, as have my fighters. Good to hear others are using the gradual method with positive results. The big cuts can be dangerous, and I've learned the hard way just how hard they are on the body.
One thing a number of tourneys still do is to weigh fighters in the event of a draw after the extension round.

I tried to help you out with the reps to Seienchin, but I was blocked too
Mrs. Seienchin bear, you'll have to settle for "intent to rep" from me

I got your back Sensei Dent & Sandman - repped Seienchin.
That would be really great to have a thread to post more of these cycles...

Osu!
Here's a good article from Joel Jamison on cutting weight:

Yeah, I did not think the article was that good...
In any event, I don't like the habit in fighting sports of drying up a fighter the day before only to try to revive him in time for the fight!

Osu!
Do you guys know a reliable way of cutting weight when you have to weigh-in the same day as the fight? I'm usually about 83kg in the morning, and I have to drop to 81kg for the fight day weigh-ins. However, I can clearly see that I'm not doing something well as I always feel a little fatigued. I try to cut these 2kg for last 2 weeks through increased cardio and regulated meals. I guess that's not good for me! So what would be the correct method in my case? I don't plan on staying in this division for too long (just this year, probably) as I definitely think fighting at my natural weight gives me so many advantages. I'm 6' 2", by the way.

For events where you fight on the same day as the weigh-in, you have to BE that weight - you can't be trying to ditch a lot of weight at the last minute. Have the weight gone by a few weeks prior to the fight if possible so you have time to get used to fighting at that weight.

I'm aware of that, but what I asked is what do you recommend me to do for these few weeks? I guess I'm not making a huge cut, so it's probably possible to do without getting fatigued. I wouldn't really like to be a weak 86kg-er either

I'm the same height and from experience getting to 70 takes a severe toll on me both physically and mentally. Though the weigh ins for the knockdown events I've been involved in are on the day which makes traditional weight cutting insanity. I'd much rather fight at my natural weight even if at a weight disadvantage, I guess the only other option which I use myself is to add lean muscle mass through training and diet tp try and sit more comfortably in the middle of the weight class this does take a considerable amount of time to achieve though. Definitely talk with a dietitian though they are brilliant for this sort of thing.
