Osu!

Monday Aug 6, 2012

Early Morning Kata Session

Good thorough warmup of light bag work and dynamic stretching. Then all my katas starting with the intermediate level ones. The plan was to do each one just one time, but only if it felt really good. I did a few of them just once - most of them required 2 iterations, a couple required 3.

Cooled down with a good stretch and called it a day.

Lets see, we have the beginner kata, 1) nijushichi no kata, then 2 - 5) four kihon katas (think different versions of taekyoku), then the beginnings of our intermediate katas 6) zen shin kotai, 7) shiho hai, then one of our most important katas 8) seisan, and then 9) niseishi and 10) ro hai sho. That's all leading up to shodan. This doesn't include the 9 different weapons katas.

After shodan there are 5 more empty hand katas (Rohai Dai, ten shin, Mugen, Bassai, and Chinto) to get to nidan.

PS: How is the ankle?

I'd put it at about 85%. PT said the ROM in that ankle is now equal to the good one.

Thank you Sandman, have you got the equivalent of Sanchin kata?
Good news for the ankle

Osu!

Tuesday Aug 7
Rest day, then I ended up working really late, didn't get home to bed until after midnight, so....

Wed Aug 8
Rest day

But I did manage to get in a good sparring session after class with Bsan, taking extreme care with the ankle, but still had good intensity and contact level

Thursday Aug 9
Early morning Session

Warmup
Several minute dynamic stretching and light shadow boxing and bag work.

Note: it takes forever to get warmed up early in the morning!

1 Minute Drills
Probably 6 x 1 min rds, mostly specific techniques or combos on the bag - all boxing style

Boxing on the Bag
3 x 2 min

Knockdown on the Bag
I was going for 3 x 2, but halfway through rd 2, I stumbled a bit, and I felt my bad ankle almost turn over. It was fine, but it spooked me a bit, and I just called it off right there. I was training without my brace - probably still too soon for that.

Cool down
Good deep stretch

Glad to hear the ankle is healing nicely Sandman. Some good workouts too. Good to see you're working around your injuries - that's real dedication there.

Thanks BigAl, but TBH, I feel like it's been ages since I've had a REALLY good hard training session. But I'm getting there

Friday Aug 10, 2012

Couldn't fit a training session in

Saturday Aug 11, 2012

Just came inside, drenched in sweat, from a nice kobudo training session in the back yard. I haven't spent much time on my kobudo katas for awhile, but I'm once again thinking about nidan grading. Again it will depend on my ankle healing up, and my ability to train regularly around my work schedule, but I think it should be doable provided I don't do anything stupid.

My weapons katas overall weren't as bad as I'd expected. I've definitely got some polishing to do, but I'm in range

Thank you

So last week was spent away from home - another week of training for work. Unfortunately I was only able to get one training session in the whole time. That one consisted of a 5 minute run on the treadmill and some dynamic stretching to warm up, then several 1 minute rds of shadow boxing (boxing), then 3 x 2 minute rds shadow boxing (knockdown), and a finisher of:

30 seconds burpees
30 seconds situps
30 seconds burpees
30 seconds situps

2 minute rest, then:

30 seconds squat kicks
30 seconds plank holds on hands, alternating bringing knee to chest
30 seconds squat kicks
30 sec plank holds like above

But today I got back to it.

Saturday Aug 18, 2012

In the basement:

Warmup:
Several minutes of dynamic stretching and light bag work

1 Minute Skills Drills - Boxing
Probably about 10 x 1 minute rounds, alternating between the slip bag, double end bag and heavy bag.

1 Minute Skills Drills - Knockdown
4 x 1 minute drills, all on the bag - Right Leg mawashi geri, LL mawashi, straight punches, hooks and uppercuts

3 x 3 Minute Rds on the Bag - Knockdown
Good hard rounds. My HR was through the roof - too much inconsistency in the training lately...

Cool Down
Skipped it Got impatient and just went upstairs instead of getting in a good stretch. I'll give myself that one, but will need to make sure to stay disciplined in the future.

Let's see if I can get another good session in tomorrow.

Osu!

Sunday Aug 19, 2012

Nice hard kata and kobudo session in the back yard. Went over all my katas, empty hand starting with the intermediate level, and kobudo katas starting from the beginning. If I felt really good with a kata I just did it once. Quite a few of them required 2 to 3 iterations.

Now I'm a big sweaty mess

Osu!

Monday August 20

Early am session

Warmup
Several minutes of dynamic stretching and footwork-only shadow sparring

Combinations
Up and down the floor 8 times. Trips 1 - 6 were each focused on a different specific combination, the last 2 I mixed in random combinations - really just shadow sparring up and down the floor.

Shadow Sparring
3 x 3 minute rds

Heavy bag
3 x 3 min rds

Impact conditioning
Couldn't find the 10 lb med ball, so grabbed a 15 lb dumb bell. Laid on the ground in a situp position and did 4 x 25 drops on the midsection.

Cool down
Good stretch

Tuesday Aug 21
Planned rest day

Wed Aug 22
Unplanned rest day - no solo training. However karate class was a real shirt soaker tonight - lots of katas in rapid succession

On another note, I found out that the next black belt test date will be Sep 29 - same date as the K4L NE Invitational! My tickets to NY are already bought - looks like I'll be waiting on the nidan test. No worries though - I'm not in a hurry

Osu!
Fred, we have Sanchin kata. However, it is the last kata taught and oddly enough we do not use sanchin dachi, but rather zenkutsudachi when performing Sanchin.

I have probed into this and have yet to receive an answer on why Sanchin is not taught early on and why we use zenkutsudachi vs. sanchin dachi.
