Training karate in 50 US states in 50 weeks; need help, introductions & accommodation
Hi Everyone,
so i am coming up to my last year at university and for my dissertation i am looking to write about the link between performance i.e. dance and martial arts in terms of film choreography. this has stemmed from an idea i had quite a while ago that i want to start planning.
i have always wanted to tour america, but i wanted it to be a challenge to myself. therefore i wanted to tour the 50 states in 50 weeks. so i proposed this to my dad who gave me a brilliant idea. what if i toured the states, and in each one i trained in a different dojo, in a different style, whilst taking in the sights that each one had to offer. therefore i have come up with my final plan ( drum roll please...)
i am going to put together a plan, a map of where i will go and who i will train with, what i am going to see, and pitch it to a studio, like with fight quest only female, and kyokushin.
so if it is possible can anyone who would be willing to let me train for them for a few nights in a week in as many of the states as possible tell me where they are so i can start compiling this and get it into a presentation. and obviously if anyone knows a studio executive willing to take on such a crazy idea.... ha-ha.
thank you in advance guys, and OSU!

That sounds like a cool idea! I would have to clear it with our head instructors, but in general they have been open to allowing outsiders in to train with us in the past. We are in Roswell Georgia, a little bit north of Atlanta. There are a handful of K4L members around the area, so could be some opportunities for you around here. Let us know when you have a rough idea when / if you might pass through here.

I changed the title of your thread to make it more explicit Starbucks.
When are you starting?
One very good starting point would be the K4L Northeast Knockdown in NY EO Sept.
All the NE K4L community will be there, kyokushin, GojuRyu and many dojos from other styles will be present.
In one day, you can likely confirm 15 to 20 weeks in your plan, plus another 10 optional and introductions to good dojos on the West coast.
Osu!
K4L and the community would be delighted to host and publish the blog, pictures and movies of your adventures.

If you're up for training in other styles during your travels, let me know when you are planning to come through Arizona and you're welcome to work out with us here. My dojo trains Shorin-Ryu (Kobayashi), but we pretty frequently work with people from other styles. I may also be able to work out something with my old dojo back in central Illinois.

Osu Starbuck,
Let us know what the dates are and where you plan to be in each state.....logistics are obviously a huge undertaking here.......but I believe this is a great endeavor that will garner a lot of support from the broad spectrum of Karate/Martial Arts disciplines.
I can definitely help here in the North East U.S.A.

hi guys, my plan is to start the January after i finish uni, so 2014. this is so that i can focus on my education and then finish up and pre production. i defiantly want to try other styles as well as kyokushin as that as something i have never been able to do where i live at the moment. i have a plan of what states i would like to hit in which weeks. sad as it is i have planned it so that i will hit California just as comic-con is in town. the question at the moment is getting enough information even if it isn't set in stone so that i can put together a presentation to pitch the idea to some backers. maybe even get myself a tv show! ha

Osu,
I did a six months journey across North & Central America visiting 40 of the US states in the process. It was a karate trip and wherever I went I was well received. What greatly helped was the internet and with it being even better established with greater social media, you should be able to have a good time.
I primarily used Greyhound and that worked fantastically. If you have to get a car to drive, it will take forever and you will become fatigued. I could jump onto a bus many hours later jump off and onto the dojo floor as at least I could rest or nap during the journey.
Greyhound was also the cheapest option - unless you have a backer, you could fly or even use Amtrak - but by road I could see so much more.
Wishing you well.

Starbuck, if you'd like - we'd welcome you in our Kanreikai dojo (HQ), in Danbury, CT. There are great Kyokushin dojos in CT, but I'm pretty sure you'll see them in many other places too, while Kanreikai has only a handful of locations in the USA, so for variety (and meeting) sake this might work for you.
And yes, it would be great to follow your experience on a blog or something like that!
Good luck!

Osu! We are a small kyokushin dojo in Elko, Nevada. We would be happy to assist you and host you to train with us. Also, we know of an Instructor in Provo, Utah so may be able to introduce you there. We are central to Boise, Idaho; Reno, NV; and Salt Lake City, Utah. Osu!

In San Jose, California, we have our dojo, Jissenteki Karate, World Oyama Karate,
and the Uechi Ryu dojo. In Downtown San Jose, the grandson of Gichin Funakoshi
has his Shotokan dojo. At the Camden Community Center, 2 miles from where I live,
there is a Japanese Goju Ryu class taking place a few times per week. Jim Mather's has
his Shotokan dojo in the Cupertino area about 15 miles away. If you like MMA training,
there are two AKA Kickboxing academies in San Jose as well. In Mountain View,
California, there is the Fairtex Muay Thai Academy. In San Francisco, there
is the Enshin Karate dojo. Tat Mau Wong has his Choy Lay Kung Fu Fut training facility
as well. 120 miles north of San Jose in Dixon, California, Sacramento area, Sensei Jim
Ernest has his Okinawan Shorin Ryu school, Ramtown Karate.
This covers some of the better schools in Northern California that I would recommend
on your visits.

I know that Starbuck is having Internet troubles at the mo - so I will just briefly thank you all on her behalf for offering help with a project that I know she has been working on for many years now and is determined to see through.

One way or another, we can help you out here in GA. My class and the Roswell class are on alternate nights; if one doesn't work out, there is always the other night to fall back on We'd love to have you, Starbuck.
I am in Norcross, GA --about 15 miles west of Roswell and about 15 miles north of Atlanta proper.

Osu! I train at the Kyokushinkaikan (IKO 1) branch in New York City. You should email or call the dojo and explain your idea. I really can't speak for them but it can't hurt to try right? http://www.ikohonbu.com/

I know that Starbuck is still having Internet troubles but I spoke to her about this over the weekend and she would just like me to add her thanks to the continuing offers of support, her plan is hatching
I'm sure you all understand from her opening post that this will take awhile to put together and as she wants to try and get some up front backing for filming the journey to this end there has to be set objectives etc along the way to make it pitch-able as a project as well as watchable for the layman as a finished project

If you make it up to a Northern State, you could just quickly jump across the border and come train up here in Canada.
Tell me if Fargo, North Dakota is in your plans, you'd only be a couple of hours away from my dojo.
