Good fight by both... but a bit too tense for a friendly exhibition match, don't you think? Anyway, OSU to both guys!

Off the top of my head and what I'm trying to remember through the drunken haze that was a conversation after the match, Garry is 38 and hasn't been fighting since 2003. However Australia brought a good team across to the NZ nationals and speaking with a few of the boys afterwards sounds like he has been training hard and giving them some excellent competition in the dojo.

well done NZS - now this is a much better fight and opponent to have on your resume than the guy from China who no one has ever heard of and only wanted to fight Chopper - congrats to both of you - Garry for availing himself, when it would be easy for him to sit back and get fat and rest on his reputation (as so many do today) and you for stepping up against someone who a lot would be intimidated by

One question - compared to other guys you have fought how hard did he punch :-)

As far as I know during Gary's "inactive" period he became quite involved with the local CrossFit group. He would make the odd appearance in the dojo every now and again when I was training in Brisbane in 2005-06.

Nice fight, by the way.

Cheers Steve, He hit a lot harder than I though he would, his punches were the most surprising. His kicks were hard, the first axe kick caught me off guard (it shouldn't have as I've seen it in his high light video's enough but different when you're face to face with it). He landed 3 perfect mawashi geri's in the first round and the third knocked the wind out of me. But it was the over hand right into my chest that seemed to generate more power than anyone 75kg should be able to deliver.

As for comparison to other fighters he hit's on par with the 90-100kg fighters I have fought and harder than some of the 130kg fighters I have gone toe to toe with. Compared with say Tariel, it was a similar experience I was overwhelmed by the speed and the power was sort of secondary to the number of techniques and the ability to hit accurately and often.

Osu!
I am 188cm (just shy of 6'2) and I am 90-95kg depending on my diet and what events I'm fighting in I think I would have been around the 93kg mark fighting Garry
